You also need to check and probably change your One Drive backup settings, so you don't end up right back in the same situation again.

Inasmuch as it has been so long since I had to file taxes, I decided to look up the current pricing on TurboTax and TaxAct:

TurboTax Free –
Cost: $0 + $29.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $29.99)

TurboTax Deluxe –
Cost: $59.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $99.98)

TurboTax Premier –
Cost: $79.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $119.98)

f you’re a W-2 income earner you may qualify for the free version of TaxAct. The free file service also supports users with retirement income. Users can claim the Earned income tax credit, the child tax credit, and the Rebate Recovery Credit through TaxAct’s free tier.

TaxAct’s free tier is truly free. Users will pay $0 for Federal filing and $0 for state filing.

Plan -------- Free ----- Deluxe+ ---- Premier+ --- Self Employed+
Federal ------ $0 ------ $24.95 ------ $34.95 ------- $64.95
State -------- $0 ------ $44.95 ------ $44.95 ------- $44.95
Total Cost --- $0 ------ $69.90 ------ $79.90 ------ $109.90

I bought TurboTax Deluxe federal +state for $29.95 on Amazon ($39.95 including $10 Amazon gift card). I believe TurboTax also offers free filing for those with only W-2 income and no itemized deductions.

Snake oil!!!! I have four external drives over 10 years old and functioning well.

Cheers!

Agreed. As long as you have at least 2 backups, why replace a drive before it dies? Makes no sense to me.

I've used primarily Seagate for years, but also have a number of Western Digital and Toshiba HDDs. The only HDD drive that ever failed on me was a Western Digital.

I've had half a dozen internal SSDs in laptops, all Samsung, and only one has failed.

So I finally realized that with a cable and the right software installed I can transfer my images from my camera to my computer without having to remove the card. Haven't actually done it yet, but will soon.

My question is this, does it matter much in protecting my camera by using the cable method rather than pulling out the card all the time to upload my images?

My first digital camera used double A batteries and with the constant changing out of the batteries the access door latch wore out. Don't want that access door latch for the cards to break or the contacts to wear down on my expensive camera.

Just wondering what the Inteligencia here thinks about this.

The only way to be certain no part ever wears out is to never use your camera.

Granted, SSDs are not susceptible to abrupt movement or G-force,
but my experience based on how many HDs I've had go bad in the past 25 years (2:1 internal and 1 external),
Not worth the price difference to me.
SSDs can die too.

I agree that SSDs can die, too. I've had three: two still functioning and one dead. That's a pretty high failure rate. I've probably purchased a dozen or more USB HDs -- a mix of Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital. Only one has died, the WD.

Most people who work for tips work very hard and don't make that much money, and I don't begrudge them a good tip. These days a 20% tip is considered standard, so you're a little light there to begin with. The difference between the tip with or without tax isn't enough to worry about. Personally, if I felt tipping appropriately was beyond my budget, I would eat out less often.

Go with 16. You can always add another 16 if it is needed.

Don't assume that. Check the manual before you buy to see what the maximum supported memory will be. I didn't, and I can't go above 16GB.

Since nobody has suggested it yet I will recommend Epson’s FastFoto 680 )I believe that’s the current model; I have the 640). Able to handle up to 30 prints at a time (it has a feed mechanism much like a fax machine) it scans both sides of the print (in order to capture notes on the back that could be (manually) added to the metadata And creates two outputs of the image side- the straight scan and one with corrections like red-eye removal and color fade enhancement.

Having scanned at least 5K prints in the past 18 months or so I can tell you this has saved 90% of the work it would require using a flatbed scanner

Worth checking out

I have two issues/suggestions with this comment:

1 – I recommend avoiding feeders due to the risk of damaging old, irreplaceable photos. Although flatbed scanning takes more time and effort, it is safer.

2 – While I would still type the info from the reverse of the photo into the metadata, I find that often the reverse image itself is worth saving as well. I have some old photos of myself as a child, and the comments my departed mother wrote on the reverse are just as valuable to me as the picture itself. Here's how I would handle this situation. Load the digital images of the front and back of the photo into Photoshop Elements 2019. After I've finished enhancing the images, I use Image/Resize/Canvas to create white space at the bottom of the image from the front of the photo, and then using the Guided option, I select Photomerge/Photomerge Compose to combine the images in order to place my mother's handwritten comments in the white space under the picture.

Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder makes it's matches through an analysis of the actual image. The file name is irrelevant.

SELF CORRECTION: In more recent reports, the mayor and other politicians state that their information was not correct, that it has now been determined that while there were a substantial number of out of staters arrested, the majority were in fact state residents.
