The IRS has a way to complete your tax forms and file them for free. I think there are some qualifications. There is also a service called TaxSlayer that lets you file for free or almost free. I'll have to check both of them out before I spend almost $100 for a tax program. I just read about this in my daily email from Family Handyman.

Costco has a great price on Turbo Tax,
then you can see if they have any other trinkets.

What program are you buying for $100? I've had a couple problems with TT the last 2 years. Been thinking about trying a change this year. But who knows.

I gave up on TurboTax a few years ago when they messed up on state returns. Now I use - I forget.

The name eludes me, but it's the other big one. It's not that the program itself is $100, but between computing and filing my tax and my son's, I wind up spending close to $100. Naturally, the cost of tax programs isn't really deductible unless it's very high.

Remember when we could deduct interest on credit cards? When a tree fell on our roof a few years ago, I thought I'd be able to deduct what the insurance didn't cover. No such luck. By the time I worked the IRS formula, I wasn't able to deduct anything. As a guy I worked with used to say, we don't make enough money to take advantage of tax breaks. I wonder how it worked out that the rich people get so many deductions. Who is it that makes those laws?

A lawyer friend once told me that 95% of new laws cover banking and insurance, and never in our favor.

I'd like to forget also.
I never had a problem with Turbo Tax.
One instance and they're done, eh?
Hope the new one doesn't screw up at some point.

Yep! One strike and you're out!

They kept raising the price every year, and the "other one" was less expensive - H&R Block.

Do you remember when TurboTax had that state problem? It was a big deal.

1. That would make a good movie theme, "The Unforgiven".

2. What prices don't rise... a rarity.

3. Nope, don't remember a Turbo Tax problem, probably because it didn't affect us.

We use a CPA and it's a bit pricy. our daughter went to one of the IRS guys who files your taxes for almost nothing, he reviewed her previous years taxes and she received a nice refund.

I used Turbo Tax for the last 3 years and never again!!

When I went to record the fact I bought the Turbo Tax # from Costco, the Turbo Tax system wouldn't take it on their web site, so I had to pay for it twice. I was unable to get any customer service person/computer or any way of complaining (maybe because of Covid) but the fact is I was never able to get Turbo Tax to accept the fact I paid for their program at Costco and then I had to pay again when I finished my Tax return thru Turbo Tax.

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for the last 4 years and like it, even though doing it myself. It saves all previous data and updates to current tax laws are incorporated. Being retired and since I no longer itemize, its quick and painless. There's an upgrade feature that's available but I've never used it. IRS has always accepted, never rejected it but then again I guess I'm low hanging fruit when it comes to taxes, I'm most likely not on their radar.... Cheers, Happy New Year Jerry.
