I haven't had to file for the last number of years because I have no income (live on Social Security), but when I did, I used TaxAct. It was free - except for the integrated state return, the charge for which was minimal. Filing was done electronically, and always was very good - never any problems. I don't know about them now, but believe it's worth a look. When I was filing, I felt TaxAct was better than TurboTax, but have no idea now.

Costco has a great price for Turbo Tax Home & Business download. I checked Amazon, they had the same Turbo Tax product for $5 less and they are sending me a $10 Amazon gift card.
The problem could be solved with a less complicated tax system. 58,000+ pages is ludicrous, and We the People are supposed to know them all. We should not have to hire people or buy tax programs in order to file our taxes. I worked one season for a tax reporting firm and found that if I called the IRS with the same question and spoke with 4 different people, I'd nearly always get 4 different answers, so how are we supposed to know how THEY are going to interpret a particular tax rule as opposed to our interpretation? I'm all for a flat tax. The more you spend the more taxes you pay. That way everyone pays their fair share. Now it is all out of the responsibility of the tax payer and is narrowed down to businesses. It would also drastically reduce the need for the humongous tax dept. we now have to support. It wouldn't be as simplified as I've stated, however, it couldn't be any more of a FUBAR than what we are dealing with and supporting now.

Silly Hogger,
the Tax Code is not written to help you or us citizens to file our taxes or even make filing taxes simple. Its written by lawyers (politicians) and accountants, FOR lawyers and accountants to create and sustain their jobs. Eliminate the tax code, then the lawyers and accounts would have to find a real productive job. Wonder why the Fair Tax and/or or Flat Tax fail to pass Congress, LAWYERS and ACCOUNTANTS not to mention if you eliminate the current tax code, you take away ALL the power Congress and politicians have over you.
Cheers, Happy New Year
I've used Tax Act for years, Feds free, state $15.

Another one of my fantasies is that lawyers be barred from running for public office.

Totally agree but we can't even get term limits without SCOTUS shooting it down much less barring lawyers from being pols.

I was at a political rally several years ago and ran into a fellow who was helping one of the candidates. He was a law student who had no intentions of going into practice. Upon graduation he was going to go right into politics at some level to be determined. Somehow, I don't think that our forefathers who framed our Constitution had the foggiest idea that people would make a career of politics. Maybe we are paying them too much, but then again, they set their own paychecks, don't they? Talk about setting the fox to guard the hen house!

Turbo Tax price INCLUDES the state tax. these others DON'T. When you add them up they are just as expensive

What about those of us that don't need a state tax program since we don't have a state income tax?
I worked at H&R Block all through the 1980s. On one of our Sunday visits to my folks house after I had been there for a couple years my Dad mentioned to me that he had a CPA firm do his taxes and they calculated he owed a penalty of over $125 for not paying the estimated taxes on some stocks he sold during the year. I told him there were four exceptions, at that time, that could eliminate or reduce the penalty and he qualified for the first exception and shouldn't have had to pay the penalty. I told him he should go back to the CPA firm and have them file an amended return to get a refund for the penalty that he shouldn't have had to pay. I also told him to not let the firm try to charge him for the amended return since they should have known how to prepare the IRS form 2210. After that incident I was preparing his returns each year.
I have used TurboTax for years, but know there application will not run on my Mac (High Sierra). So its H&R Block. Anyone know what Mac OS it runs on?
What is that? Two states? LOL
