Turbo Tax price INCLUDES the state tax. these others DON'T. When you add them up they are just as expensive

Inasmuch as it has been so long since I had to file taxes, I decided to look up the current pricing on TurboTax and TaxAct:

TurboTax Free –
Cost: $0 + $29.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $29.99)

TurboTax Deluxe –
Cost: $59.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $99.98)

TurboTax Premier –
Cost: $79.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $119.98)

f you’re a W-2 income earner you may qualify for the free version of TaxAct. The free file service also supports users with retirement income. Users can claim the Earned income tax credit, the child tax credit, and the Rebate Recovery Credit through TaxAct’s free tier.

TaxAct’s free tier is truly free. Users will pay $0 for Federal filing and $0 for state filing.

Plan -------- Free ----- Deluxe+ ---- Premier+ --- Self Employed+
Federal ------ $0 ------ $24.95 ------ $34.95 ------- $64.95
State -------- $0 ------ $44.95 ------ $44.95 ------- $44.95
Total Cost --- $0 ------ $69.90 ------ $79.90 ------ $109.90

The IRS has a way to complete your tax forms and file them for free. I think there are some qualifications. There is also a service called TaxSlayer that lets you file for free or almost free. I'll have to check both of them out before I spend almost $100 for a tax program. I just read about this in my daily email from Family Handyman.

I have been using H&R Block for the last few years. Worked fine, however I went online looking to down load a tax
program only to find out that all of the current programs will not work with windows 7. I really don"t want to have to upgrade to windows 10. Does anyone know if Taxslayer or FreetaxUSA will work as an online filer using a windows 7 machine?

They (Tax Act) don't have software for Mac so I can forget those clowns.

I’ve been thinking about advertising free or almost free tax services. The real income would come from all the personal information I’d be able to sell. Would you like to be my first “free” customer??

I'm in the same boat. I have High Sierra OS for Mac and they want to require me to load up a more recent OS that is loaded with bugs. Isn't that thoughtful??

I have used Turbo Tax online filing for a number of years now. They handle my federal and state returns absolutely free. Takes about 20 minutes and done.

I've been using the free online version of TaxAct for the last 2 or 3 years for both Federal and State. Easy, accurate and free. They will try to sell you upgrades like live tax advice and such but you don't have to buy.

TaxAct.com has both online and download (do it on your computer) in 4 varieties depending on the type of income, adjustments, and decuctions you have. The online price range is from $0.00 to $64.95 with 49.95 additional for the state returns. The download version price range is from $19.95 to $119.95 with state returns $50.00 for the basic and 1 return included on the three others.

I have used Taxact since the '80s when the only version was download and $19.95 and was the only product that offered a version that ran on the late great IBM OS/2.

I gave up on TurboTax a few years ago when they messed up on state returns. Now I use - I forget.

I've been a TurboTax user since they came into existence. Never have had even a question about my filings. Then again, Texas has no state income tax, so I can't rate TurboTax in that realm.

OK, but do you trust "free" to do a good job? I suppose they may be OK if your taxes are very simple, which I understand they are for many people. But I have owned income property for many years and would not trust them. Forty years ago I switched from a tax preparer that only charged about $70. The last year I used him he did my taxes and said I needed to pay an additional $900 to Uncle Sam. I was in the process of buying my first large property and had to show the bank my taxes from the the last year and current. The banker looked at the current year taxes for maybe 5 seconds, looked at me and said, "You are paying to much, go to Meicher and Associates." I went back to my tax preparations person, and told him what the banker said. He double checked his work, found a mistake and said "He was right, I made a mistake, you will get $700 back. The banker said "You are still paying to much, go to Meicher and Associates. I did and got $7000 back. I have been with him ever since. I don't care that he charges much more than the others for obvious reasons.

It's just that I believe some of us might have been looking for other options.
