Thank you all for the suggestions and information and JIm for the clarification between extension tubes (which have not yet seen) and macro lens which I went to photo shop yesterday and tried out - put them on my wish list but they ended up being 100 for three and not ready to spend that right now. Going to take into account all information here and continue with my practicing and add these toys to my wish list. Thank you!

you dont say what type camera you have, but the canon 7D has a specific focus point for that purpose - it is the expansion focus that lets you set the focus on a specific subject and it follows them even if they move - pretty cool - i have onlyjust began to experiment with it - but its pretty impressive!

I am surprised by the f11?! would have thought to get that bocha you were at an f2.8 or something - is it not necessary with that particular lens - don't understand that?!

Thank you - sorry to be just getting back to you now. Sorry it was openended - no, I am not looking to buy another lens (for time being) was wondering if it was possible with the equipment I have. I did one once that came our rather good - but not sure how to read the info off of a photo (thats a whole nother subject!) but don't know exactly how I managed to make it work before and now cannot seem to get the great sharp shot of the ring!?! Was hoping to hold off buying another lens for a bit. Your photos are breathtaking by the way - as was the one of the -was it a dragonfly- wow - they were all great shots - want to be able to do that - gonna read up again on your advice and also look into the extension tubes for the future m aybe. thank you all!

you are correct (i dont use this with customers) but yeah, need to do that- need to put the more positive spin on it and learn to build my confidence instead of defeat it! Thanks for the advice!

Hi! I am actually in the process of being incorporated and getting my website and portfolio together as wedding photographer. I am not the best photographer (yet) but I am definitely tenacious and I give it my all. I have done over 30+ weddings for free and only this year began to charge. I had done many family ones for free and flattered and excited to do them (never felt it was anything but good and excited and ALWAYS more nervous than the bride and groom - but did it). I was asked then by three different people who saw my photos (who I did NOT know) to do their weddings - now I became nervous - like you - OMG - but the first time I did not return the girls call because I was afraid and never did call her, but this past year I decided to do it because that is where my passion is. I have done four for strangers! I realized I had to get more experience and more importantly I know that I have a bridal show in January and to sell myself I have to believe in myself and do well. So every day for the past year (and I mean pretty much every day) I take photography class. I am the teacher and the student- home schooling I call it. I am far from knowing what I am doing and the more I learn the more I know I need to learn. My advice is definitely do the wedding - you have warned her and told her you can only do your best - there is nothing more you can do - here is a perfect opportunity for your experience and portfolio. With digitals you know you can check to be sure you have some good shots and you know you will get them, so believe in yourself, this is a kickstart to do it if you want. My favorite new saying...Make a wish and then make it come true! You have till January - get busy - you can do it!! Sorry this is so long winded - but I saw myself in you! I did four weddings in the past three months and I have three between now and October. My Dad pointed out - in all the weddings I've done neither I nor they have been disappointed in the pics - so I am just going to keep getting better and you will too! I have gotten rave reviews from my brides and call myself an amateur professional or professional amateur but either way, I make sure before I leave that wedding - they have tons of great shots and then I kill my babies as they call it (get rid of any that would be a poor reflection on me - and that part is not easy!) Okay now I am rambling - sorrrrry!

I love that one too- had read it in a magazine and it stuck with me. I also love this one -- and think of it often at weddings
Wait and something beautiful will happen! (and it always does!)

Wow, sounds like someone is either jealous or just really rude or both! I would try not to take it personally because there are always going to be a-holes out there, it is how you deal with them that makes all the difference. Maybe responding with kindness is the best approach. Sometimes makes them feel small - as this person certainly should. Don't take it personal though, I have had people say some really hurting things while on my learning curve to being a good photographer, but as the president says - if we give in -than they have won! Mean people basically are miserable - don't let them make you miserable, too! And how sad to insult your photo subjects and basically call them ugly. This tells you something about this individual, so their opinion should not even be given consideration!

I would like to take some macro photos with my CANON 7D. I have done some and they came out great but lately cant seem to reproduce and I have taken a few that aren't bad, but want the best shot possible. I have a nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) and the 24-70mm f2.8. What would be the ideal recipe for a great ring shot on a flower or a close up of a piece of jewelry or shoe, etc?! Thank you in advance for any insight!

This is an interesting topic and I am taking note as I have IS on my 18-135mm but I just want to say how ingenious and cool your pic is - it is brilliant as well as hilarious!

Okay, I just remembered why this could be a problem - if use are in al servo -- and you do try to recompose a shot in a few of these focus clusters - i believe it can confuse that movement and ruin the shot - because you are moving the camera - does that make sense.

This is another thing i love about this forum - there are always kind people willing to take the time to let you know what they see you could do to improve the photo - it may be a great photo but with their input - who knows next shot you take may be award-winning. It is the little details and the composition that I love to learn more and more about, and this forum is wonderful for that - I feel I have learned so much from the posts and others critiques of them. Then when I take a photo these things will be in the back of my mind to pay special attention.
