If your camera is set to use "automatic selection" of the focus points, it may be focusing on the nearest, brightest object. There have been many posts about this same subject recently. The gist of it is, most people shooting 'action' shots or the like, recommend setting your focus point selection to 'manual', and selecting the center point.
This ensures that the central object in the frame that you are composing becomes the focal point, and helps it get in sharp focus. Using a small enough aperture (f/5.6 or above) will help keep your depth of field larger too.
The 70-200 can focus sharp enough to cut your fingers, so it's not a hardware problem.
Also on some cameras the center focus point is the only "cross type" focus point which will focus better on moving subjects anyway.
Agree with the above comments. Use your center focal point then the only problem you will have to worry about it making sure to get the center focal point on the subject you want to focus on. Sometimes even with this, the focus can be off onto something behind or beside where you wanted to focus. Nature of the beast with moving objects:)
Check your camera and get rid of the mutiple focus points. I went to a center focus point only and wherever I put the red box that is the center of the pic and where it is focused at. three football pics attached for your review
Dasloaf,
Your pics are great, what camera and lens are you using? I'm looking for a new lens and just wondering what you are using.
Thanks tons!
Canon 7d with the newest the first verision of the IS 70-200m F2.8. and a lot of luck!
here's two for an example - clearly taken boom boom ... one is in focus - the second is focused on the grass .....
you dont say what type camera you have, but the canon 7D has a specific focus point for that purpose - it is the expansion focus that lets you set the focus on a specific subject and it follows them even if they move - pretty cool - i have onlyjust began to experiment with it - but its pretty impressive!
Use the center focus point only and just move with the action. Sometimes you will get it and sometimes if they move a sudden different direction or you move you hand slightly you won't get the right focus. But mostly you will, just practice, practice, practice.
Examples of continuous action shots with the center focus points.
I am revisiting this post as I am having more issues with the grass being in focus than the action - sometimes I wonder if it's because I'm standing on the side and actually aiming down so the grass is closest ?!?! It's becoming an issue that is totally and completely frustrating me. Ideas --- please!! Thanks ...
