I do use exactly that tablet Don, it's the creative juices I need to get flowing!

I have that problem every now and again.

Wonderful creation Don, I'm sure she'll love it. Who wouldn't? Thank you for sharing it with us!

Thanks Minnie, and I'm glad to share my work here. Ali will be with us here in Nashville this year, so I'll share some pics after she opens it up.

Wow! Many thanks indeed for showing how it’s done Don, I’m sure I’m not the only one here that will be grateful for the insight to how it’s achieved. Needless to say, it’s beautiful and fascinating. I now understand much better and may even be tempted to look further into the process.

Glad to do it. I have had to post the same type of things to skeptical trolls around the web for some of my other work. All you need is a Wacom INTUOS Pro medium tablet to get started. There's a mild learning curve to get used to the tablet, but once you do, you'll never buy another mouse again! If you can sketch anything with a pencil, you can certainly use a stylus. It's also a great tool for photo editing because of it's precise nature.

Give it a shot.

I agree with the comment that you should contact Disney for work!

Thanks for your wonderful comments, and I'm sure she'll love it as well!

Great job Don, your patience shows....

Thanks Frank. It does take some serious patience at times — the mushrooms are what tried my patience this time!

Well done. Looks like something Disney did. They might want you to do some consulting work. :)
Like all the saturated colors. Everything looks in proper perspective for the piece.

Thanks Jim, glad you like it. I will say that some of the techniques and brushes I have created and learned are from a friend who spent over 20 years at Disney. I was able to do a freelance project for them (Disney Educational) back in 1987.

Yes, very nicely done Don. The colours are spot-on and the composition is magical. Very creative and without doubt the lady will be in wonderland when she sees it.
On a technical note, did you create each character by digitally painting or modify an existing image of the character? I’ve tried over-painting photos, usually to change the clothing of a character in my composites, but I have not started from scratch. I do know how time-consuming an image of this complexity can be! Again, well done.

Thanks for your kind words Magneto, I'm sure Ali will like it as well. As for your technical questions ... Yes, I do digitally paint these from scratch. I was an illustrator, cartoonist, graphic designer and traditional painter long before I ever picked up a camera. And I still incorporate all these mediums in a number of my current works.

I belong to a digital painters group and as a condition of becoming a member, I have to document the progress of my work in either video or screenshot form. So I've attached a composite so you can see some of the progression of this piece ...

Awesome in conception and execution. The only thing I'd criticise is the vignette - just a touch darker than I'd prefer.

Thanks R.G. I grant you, it is a bit dark on the computer, however, when it goes to print, the darks are spot on.
