I still have the question for any of you as to which settings I should use. Go with the Av, Tv or M settings, or play it safe and use the portrait setting for now untill I get a little more experiance?

Experimint take 1 picture on each setting . and see what the results are .

Thank you. I do have a Nikon. With the 60mm lens, how far should I be from my subject when I take a pic?
At Minimum Focusing Distance, the Working Distance (lens front element to subject) of a 60-mm macro lens is 90-mm (3.5-inches) to achieve 1:1 magnification (life-size). You can obviously shoot at greater WD, but the image is smaller on sensor.

UHH has an entire section devoted to macro-photography: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html Several of us shoot Nikon. One of the threads is about macro set-ups.

Try using high speed shooting when hand holding. You will have a better chance of getting a good shot.

Well first of all if you are using spot metering and putting your focus point the feeder then that is what will be in focus and the rest my very well be out of focus. If you want the feeder and the bird in focus I personally would use partial metering and focus on the birds eye. Since you are using a tri pod and have time to take the shot I would auto focus holding the shutter button only 1/2 way. Once you are in focus switch over to manual focus. This will lock in your focus then take the shot. I would also turn of IS if you have it.

Just my idea.

Alway try to keep you shutter the same as your focal lenght of you lens ....300mm lens no less than 1/ 300 shuterspeed..100mm lens shutter speed 1/100

About one year ago I upgraded to a Canon t2i body. Then I had to upgrade my zoom to the Canon 70-300 IS L lens. Recently I decided to upgrade my walk around lens to the Canon 18-70 IS L lens. NOW I can't stop thinking about the 7D body!!! I want to know if it is as spectacular as 'everyone' says. I just rented it for one week (arrives Tuesday) to give it a whirl. I'm afraid I'm going to fall in love...

Fran , You are now a camer Addit ...lol

That might work if the outer ring of the CP did not freely rotate. I tried pushing down and turning....the outer ring turns fine, but the inner ring that is cocked on the UV filter is still stuck.

google "camera filter wrench" Amazon has 2 for $8.95.

OK, got the two filters off the lens but they are still firmly stuck together. Now I need to get the two filters separated. Assuming I can separate them, is there any kind of lubricant that I can use, after I use a magnifier and strong light to make sure the threads on the lens have not been stripped, to lubricate the lens and filter rings so I can use other filters on it, and the two filters I have if their threads have not been stripped also?

One thing I've found with UV filters and such is that when you grip them or squeeze them hard with your fingers, you actually bind the threads worse. There have been times I've tried with all my might and couldn't separate a filter from the front of a lens and then later I held it gently with very little squeeze pressure and they literally fell apart easily.

When this happens squeesing the filter . I take the palm of my hand and lay it flat on the end of the filter ,lens and press down with my palm and unscrew the filter . This way your not putting any side pressure on the threads.Work every time .

I knew there was a reason I kept #2 pencils around. :-) Now, do you have any magic for getting the two filters apart?

Strap wrenches are cheap, $5.00, most hardware stores carry them, rubberband on a stick, you'll need two

Thats too big the band is wider than 3or 4 filters!

I have small ones, use the top of one and the bottom the other.
Where did you get small one s? and It they are cross threaded it no big expense to throw them away and replace .

But from what the op says they may be cross threaded and unusable even if they can be separated.

Well..I would be able to have the two DSLR's ready to go with different lenses.I used to have two Olympus OM 1's,and an OM-10,and I always took all of them with me and they were rigged with the three lenses I primarily used. I didn't have to swap lenses.

Well you might as well get a camera for each of you lens!

That sounds like great advice! Thank-You!
The prime lens was a bit too limiting.
Perhaps it was my lack of experience.
I have very basic knowledge but a very good eye!

What do you mean by "a bit too limiting" taking picture of babys ??

I want to get a wireless Shutter Release remote for my Canon T3i Camera. Need to keep cost under $50.00. I see some on Amazon that shows they use the Hot Shoe, I want to be able to use hot shoe for external flash so those don't work for me. Is there a good wireless one that will work with my camera?

Suzanne

I use a remote shutter release that is pretty much like a tv remote control. Push the button the camera fires. eBay: about $6.00. Is there something I don't know?
