Of note is the fact that most of the shots show horses and motorcars on the same streets. It was a time of transition.

Quick question. Given the one stop difference in aperture between the above two and the price doubling in the process for the 2.8, for those who have used both lenses, please provide me with some insight. I am retired and a hobbyist on a budget, but I enjoy good glass. Both of these lenses are Canon L's, so that is taken out of the equation. Should the 16-35 be head and shoulders above the 17-40 in performance, it may induce me to save the extra time required in order to purchase. However, comparable performance and feedback would indicate that the F4.0 lens is the way to go, particularly since it would only require about half as much time to acquire the necessary funds.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I am considering purchasing either a Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS macro or a Canon 100mm f2.8 IS macro. Both are currently on sale at this time with the Canon being about $100 more. My question: assuming equal performance and quality, do third party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) hold value as well as Canon or Nikon lenses?
Thanks in advance.

Okay, hope you are happy. Your post just put me over the top and I ordered an SX50. Didn't really need it; already have a point and shoot, a 60D and a 5D. My wife is away for a week and I hope that I receive the SX50 before she returns. That way she'll never know since she doesn't know one camera from a bucket of mud.
Heck, who am I kidding.....when she returns she'll immediately know that I am not totally forthcoming with her (wives are like that). I might as well just call her and fess up and take my pre-verbal abuse over the phone. That way she'll either be calm when she returns or have time to build up a big finger pointing indignation with hands-on-hips and guilt inducing foot patting.

Hope you are happy......I know that I am.

Hadn't thought of that. Indeed scary.

You know, parents could train a kid to do that. Scary.

Thanks. It will probably be a cold day in July before I can afford another, but I will start saving today.

Never liked coffee. Never saw the point. Starbucks, Schmarbucks. Wife, though, looooooves it. Has one of those Keurig coffee makers. Thinking of divorcing me and marrying the machine. Might be a good match.

This is not a question and does not require any response. It is merely a testimonial of my experience.

I am retired and on a fixed income. My photography hobby consumes a good portion of my disposable funds. I am a Canon shooter and have wanted an "L" lens for some time, mainly due to the reviews and testimonials of others. How good, I thought, can they (the "L" lenses) be? I was pretty happy with the non "L"'s that I have used all my photographic life. But my curiosity was relentless and I just had to have one.

Recently, after several months of saving, I finally was able to purchase a used 24-105 f4 "L". From the moment I removed it from the box and held it in my hands I was awestruck. Its heft, workmanship and general feel bespoke quality. And glory be, when I attached it to my 60D and peered through the viewfinder I was further smitten. The clarity of the view coupled with the speed and quietness of the autofocus have left me breathless and searching for the proper words. And then, when I did some pixel peeping in my software, I was further blown away with the resolution. The lens is as good or better than anything else that I have owned. The one lens that I have that even comes close is my Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6.

I feel as though I have reached the summit and can now see the sun really rise for the very first time.

I know all this sounds a bit much for a lens and I also know that all camera makers make quality lenses. But this is my first time walking upon the hallowed ground of REAL quality in lenses, at least in my view. So please forgive my enthusiasm and welcome me to the club.

I'm thinking about trying Carbonite for file security. I currently back all my files up onto two external hard drives and then copy them all onto DVD's and put them into another room in the house. It occurred to me, though, that if the house were to burn down, that I would lose it all. How reliable is Carbonite and what are the file size limitations? I have about 45,000 photos of varying file sizes that I would like to maintain. Most are in the megabyte range. How long does it take to transfer or back up those files and then to retrieve? Also, does the base price of $59/year do it all?
Thanks
Dan
