Jpeg is processed in the camera. Raw allows you to process in software and get many more effects.
Go to a store and handle Nikon, Canon and Sony and see which is more comfortable for you. All are good.

B and H Photo has used Sony A55s and A77. I like both. I would get one and the see about a Tamron all in one lens.

I use Sony camera and like them very much. the
A77 and A99 are great depending on whether you want full frame or not.
If you are satisfied with JPEG, just use it. At some time you may want to post process. If you do you will want to shoot if raw.

Nice lens. You always have to sharpen a bit when you edit in Photoshop.
I have a Sony Nex6. I use it some, but still use my Sony DSTR more.
