I wish that you had checked save original so that I could critique a full size image instead of the thumb nail. From this it looks like the lighting is beautiful, but I can't tell what the details are like.

Thanks, Judy. I agree on the need for both elements. I have much better pictures of rocks, and more interesting pictures of puffins. But I think this one gets closer to telling a story. But I can't believe you actually typed the words "just another puffin"

From a person who has never seen a puffin in person, that may not have been the best wording. But I can find hundreds of puffins photos with a google search.

I agree with most. Without the puffin it would be a picture of a rock. Without the rock just another puffin, though I would love to have a puffin photo in my collection. But the two together tell a powerful story. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It needs that little puffin to be a surprise when you see it. If it took up any more of the frame I am afraid it would just be another puffin shot.

Technically only one photo per post.
The top one is in my opinion over exposed. I like the bottom best though I would try and tweak it just a little so the top of the hat stands out just a little from the background. Not a lot. I love the composition and the richness, which you lose in the overexposed version.

I would love to see this full size. From the thumbnail it looks to be nicely lit for the most part. I think I would like to see a little more definition to the hat as it fades into the shadows. It may very well be fine in the full size version, but here I think it needs to not blend into the background quite as much. I love the colors and the composition.

A photograph should stand on its own merits and not on the danger in which you put yourself to get it. It's either a well captured image or it's not. I just took a train trip through Canada and shot lots of pictures from the rear platform of the train car trying to balance a 150-600mm zoom lens. While I captured some nice snapshot quality pictures of bald eagles there wasn't a single one I'd put up on a critique board and expect someone to give me credit for trying hard under difficult circumstances. I compare my bird images to the best on this site like Regis, for example. No matter how hard I tried to hold the lens still it wouldn't give me a good image from a train going 50 mph with icy wind in my face.
A photograph should stand on its own merits and no... (show quote)

Well said, but a very hard concept to grasp. It seems the human nature wants to get credit for the difficulty of the shot and not the merits of the individual shot. It is also very hard to divorce yourself from the feelings you get when looking at a photo that you took under extreme or difficult conditions. The photographer often relives those emotions. We all have to learn to look at images subjectively. I think that is where this section is good. You can get the opinions of others on your work.

The Bush is covering up the railing. There was sign there, it was hard to make the railing naturally connect to the wall, without looking weird

It is what it is I am not sure you could have approached it any differently. I just wish it wasn't there. :)

Another sinister looking church, or maybe it is standing strong in the face of evil. I think you did well with the B&W treatment. I am not crazy about the bush in the foreground, but I don't think they would appreciate you removing it for the photo. I just wish it weren't there.

I think if your subject is the window and benches a tighter crop would make that more clear. There is a lot of church to the left that is uninteresting that wouldn't be missed and I think it would strengthen the composition. My guess this is an 8X10 crop I think if you used the same crop only flipped it to vertical.
I think the exposure etc are fine and I believe with the crop you wouldn't need the vignette.

That always happens to me here. I thought that the moment I posted it and I am so glad you said it. Now I know I'm not just going crazy. Same pic from same computer.

I think it happens a lot here also. It is weird because it doesn't always happen.

You know that I love it, though it seems a little darker here than on FB. I wonder if it was a touch brighter.....

This shot is sharp and well composed and I like the B&W treatment. I am not so sure I like the ominous clouds, but they maybe part of your story. To me they give the church a sinister feel.

It's amazing how many people look here in photo critique, and don't leave a critique just saying

Some people like to just look and not get involved.
Some people are not comfortable leaving a critique
Some people just don't have the time to write something.
Some people are afraid to get shot down for their opinion so it is safer not to say anything.
Me personally I don't know if I am coming or going so a quick look sometimes is all I have time for.
