I had the same problem, looked the lens over and found that I had inadvertently moved the lock button. Prior to that I didn’t know it even had the lock switch.

I took a look at that site and wanted to know about image organization. I did not read thoroughly through the site but searched for the word "organise" ("organize" is not there). The only use of that word was in reference to finding tools. Then I looked for the word "search". Again, the word was used in reference to tools. I did not see any reference to searching for images or organizing (or organising) images.

Another thing I did not come across in that page is a date. I really like to see a date prominently displayed on any web page that gives a review of anything. How else are we to know how long ago the review was presented? Is it in danger of being outdated? Software changes fairly rapidly.

So I have to ask again: How does this software compare to Lightroom in terms of image organization? Does it use a database?

The article describes the Lighttable module as basically being comparable to the library module of Lightroom. Quote from the article: “Lighttable is functionally like Lightroom’s Library module.“
I don’t see a date on this either, but I don’t see the importance of a date as it looked to me to be a pretty good comparison for someone with no knowledge of either program to use in making a decision. The OP was looking for a free software comparable to Lightroom thus I believe the article shows there to be negligible difference in that arena. He will not find anything for free that compares closer.

darktable does provide provide digital asset management. Tags (keywords) can be assigned in batch or individual raw files, film rolls (groups of photos), advanced searching (regular expressions) etc...

OP was asking opinions on free raw workflow and asset management programs. I just simply provided an option that I found works for me and was very careful as to not compare, because honestly I've never used Lightroom, so it would be an unfair comparison for me to make.

GIMP is more like Photoshop. I’ve never used it, so I can’t comment on it’s ease of use, but I believe the Lightroom equivalent is called Darktable.

A “generational” storm huh? The entire central Iowa area had similar damage on August 10 when we were hit by a “Derecho”, described as an inland hurricane. Thousands of trees downed, hundreds of homes damaged, just in our town alone, as we’re still repairing damage from an F3 tornado that tore through our Main street for 4 miles, from one end of town to the other 2 years ago. Many other towns across the state were in the same boat. I first heard the word derecho 9 years ago when one did similar damage to our town. Seems as if “generational” storms are happening way too often.

I downloaded the free trial this week, and have been using it to enhance a few photos that were pretty declent except for bland sky. Wow! What a difference the sky replacement made! I will probably purchase when the free trial ends. I’m using it on a windows computer.

I shoot in the 3:2 ratio always. Each year I go thru my photos to find 4 that I can enter into the photography salon at the Iowa state fair. The requirement for that event is that the entries must be 11X14 prints. Now, when I crop to print at that size, 80% or so of the photos changes the composition to such an extent that the photo is really unusable for that competition. I need to lobby for using 12X16 prints instead, but I’m sure their reasoning is to allow more photos to be displayed. As it is, they can only display about 425 out of 5000 entries.

This is the only bridge that still is in use. I’m not sure when it was built. It was the smallest of the bridges I photographed.

Cedar bridge was in use when it was burned down but I think they blocked the road after it was rebuilt.

Bay photo and Mpix. Recently ordered a batch of 11X14s and they were perfect, and got them in 3 days.

I love the composition Linda, also the lighting on the bird and backlighting of the leaves. The fact that you can’t see the eye doesn’t detract at all, rather gives a bit of mystery.

Thank you to everyone that replied. I think I’ll go ahead and enter it. It was the almost pastel color pallette that drew me to it.

I'm considering entering this photo in a contest as a landscape, but I'm not sure if it'll be de-considered due to the restriction in the rulles that says"Place or Landscape MUST be the main subject. What do you say hoggers?
