Many of the people on this forum have never dealt with the Jewish influence in New York. My wife was from New York and that influence is considerable.
The kids in school there are out of school twice as much as the rest of the country because the school system there recognizes all Jewish holidays on top of all the holidays recognized in the rest of the country. Its just a fact of life in New York, where the largest percentage of Jews in the entire country reside.
Fact of life, religious freedom, freedom of choice. Wh**ever you call it, it is "freedom" and that's what founded this country. Its your choice not to deal with Jews and that's YOUR freedom. But to make this kind of statement will always illicit the kind of response you are seeing here.
I would be scared to death if it didn't!!!
Oh, and I am not Jewish. I was baptized catholic but was too young to voice an opinion at the time.

Welcome PNagy!!!

I am new here as well. Just about a week. And I dont get caught up in the general chit chat but this caught my eye this morning and had to, with a clear conscience, add my two cents worth.

This is an absolutely wonderful forum. The people are great with great in sites and wisdom, the weekly contests are fun and there is even a weekend contest.

Check out the rest of the site and I think you will see it is a great place for photographers.

Imposing their religion? Only if they force you to go to Temple in order to place an order. The baseball coach at my alma mater, Wheaton, pitched for the Dodgers, but had one stipulation....he wouldn't pitch on Sunday. Some people just have the dedication to follow their convictions.

Hall of Famer, Sandy Koufax took Jewish holidays off, too.

Wow! I must agree with most everyone here. It is their business if they are open 1 day per week or 7. And it is their business for what reason.

I agree, if one needs it that quickly, go somewhere else but lets not take away peoples right to own their own business and have their own religion.

My son works for a company, he writes programs for them. They are also Jewish and close on Fridays at certain times and are closed on Sat. My son is not Jewish but really like working for them and he likes it that no matter what kind of a crunch they are in he is always guaranteed one day off a week.

The huge point is here - please don't attack, complain, etc. over the rights in our Country to run our business the way we choose and to honor our religion. And do you know they are not Americans?

Thanks Reginal for the welcome. So thrilled to be here. I did put a photo in the recent photo contest and one called "Columbine" I think in "the introductions" And the weekend challenge was fun too. I am loving this place. Nice to have something to do in the winter while away from colorado and snow etc.

Welcome to UHH, colo jeep gal...Judging from the photo you posted you're ready to give as well as get advice! I'm still at the starting gate and have found the IS lenses to be an essential to avoid camera shake, etc. They have also helped to boost my confidence level whenever I've been asked to take photos at recent events. Please post some more of your efforts!

White Columbine. I desaturated it in PS then erased the yellow.

To clarify - I think this is a GREAT idea.

[quote=colo_jeep_gal]I think this is great.
I would like to say thumbs up on all the photos entered.

This is a columbine where I turned it into a b&w then used the eraser in PS to bring out the yellow.

There are a couple I played with. Nothing too creative but it does make one think when cropping. So here is my first.

I took this last summer. I was not really happy with it, but didn't delete it either...saw some potential. So this is what I came up with. I have some other ideas for it I hope to develop later. A fun challenge.

Hi Susie, I hope you can do it in PSE. It sure is fun and does make a great frame. Someone shared it with me and have had fun.

Here's my try using PSE 10. I tried to align the centers so the edges would be the same size, but the align tool wouldn't work. I'll have to practice with that.

I hear ya on the HP. I have had my Epson 1900 for a couple of years and I love it. I had a bit of trouble at one time having the paper load, then I use alcohol on a cloth and wiped clean the paper grabber and it solved the problem. I just love Epson. Have the Epson photo scanner. I have tired HP and Canon but best so far is the Epson.

The last time I had a paper load problem the factory rep told me NOT to use alcohol on those rubber rollers. It dries up the surface chemistry and will cause the rollers to eventually slip. He recommended warm water to wipe those down.

In photoshop I take the photo, adjusted if needed, then I blur it. Then I save it using a dif. name. Like" columbine blur".
I then bring it up in a different window and using that little tool at the top left side I take the in focus photo and slip it on to the blur.
Oh, I have left the blur one at the original size - 5x7 but crop the in focus photo an inch smaller - 4 x 6. it took me a while to get it but once I did it was really easy to do.

I thought you were using the blur tool but just wasn't sure about how you kept it in a rectangle. I have PSE 10. I'll see if I can do that. I really like the look. Thanks.

Oh, my - thank you all so very much. This is great information. I have inherited two IS lenses from my photographer Dad. One I use the most but I have the IS turned off most of the time. But will experiment using it.

My favorite is the 28-135 1:3.5 - 5.6 IS
The other IS is a 75 - 300 1:4-5.6

Again, thank you everyone! :D

So, then, perhaps you are somewhat new to all of this??? If so, are you aware that one should use a shutter speed equal to or higher than the lens focal length in order to obtain acceptably sharp images, i.e., if you are shooting your 75-300 lens at 300mm, you should have your shutter speed at or higher than 300. If not then my examples would have meant little to you. If so, then you would see that my first posted shot of the flycatcher was shot at 200mm at 1/30th of a second, and without IS to get a shot as sharp, I should have been shooting at a minimum of 1/250th or higher, 3 stops up. Therein lies the benefit.

May I suggest that when you reply to a comment that you choose the "quote reply" button rather than "reply." Without that, the first comment is not included and it is therefore difficult to see to whom you are replying.

Welcome to uhh. I'm no pro either and came here 35 years ago with a camera due to the beauty and all else encompassed here and refuse to leave 'cept "feet first." I will say though that using a little RV with a hitch on the back for a 4X you don't notice that wind, rain, and snow quite as much but you still get all the "blessings" when you walk outside. :-)
