All but 1 of my lenses are IS. Makes a big difference when handheld.

I use them exclusively...mainly because I hate being tied down to a tripod when I'm shooting birds or horses.

I have it on all my lenses (except the 35mm f1.8). It's good to have, especially in low light or windy situations.

Gal, welcome to the Hog.
I have two, but the IS is very rarely helpful for me even though I use it. I use my non-IS lenses just as much and my results are the same or better.
I shot daylight pretty fast or low light with a tripod. During the transition period they would be good, but I don't find myself there often. Most of my stuff is handheld but would have motion blur if it was slow. I don't do much indoor stuff.

It depends on how you shoot.

If you mostly hand hold (events, sports, etc.) IS is certainly an advantage.

If you mostly use a tripod (landscape, still life, macro, portraits, etc.) IS is probably wasted money.

I still use some of the Nikkor lenses that I have owned since the early '70s. But I find that my keep rate has improved dramatically, since I have added VR (vibration reduction) lenses to my repertoire.

On a different subject, my family spends summers at 10,000-feet on the Western Slope, in Gunnison County.

A couple of my photos from there. Between Crested Butte and Gothic. Thought I died and went to Heaven it was so beautiful.

Love them! Most of my shooting is hand held. Along with 'rifle shooting techniques' the IS, VR, VC or whatever you want to call it, is a fantastic invention.

Too many times I leave it on. That is not a problem. When I forget that it is off is when I get into trouble. Love it. I shoot indoor gymnastics.
