I shoot a lot of birds, some of which are out of range of my Canon 100-400 L lens. I'm thinking about getting a 1.4x extender. Does anyone have an opinion/experience with extenders? I understand that you lose an Fstop.

I called Canon before about That same problem. Those extenders will not focus higher then f/5.6 which wouldn't be a problem anyhow because you will be on a Tri-Pod anyhow. I'm going to purchase a 1/4 too.

This might be the problem with focusing problem. I can't pass the eye test for driving. My eyes play tricks on me. I wear contacts. I would get your eyes checked. I'm almost positive that is your problem. Being far sighted is a problem. You can not see close-up. If you wear glass' I will bet that is it.

The is does a good job when shooting fast and when using multiple focus points. It will leave non in the dust. I have two of them. 100-400 mm. 24-105mm. You always get what you pay for. Plus you can use non or is.

It could be a older lens. I have the 100-400 mm 1:4.5-6 L IS. Sells for $1,600. I have a 24-105mm 1:4 IS USM. $1,000. Both are Canon. Love both these Lens. I read your comment and went to my bag. Put everything together. Listened to both Lens could hardy hear any noise. Put my ear to both Lens. Could hardy hear any noise @ all. I would call Canon Techs they are very good. They will tell you one way or the other. Tell the they are used and from E-Bay. They are very informative and know what they are talking about. 1-800-652-2666 I myself would send it back. If that noise is not suppose to be there it will not last very long @ all it's not worth it. Lots of luck and keep take in pictures

Your right Jen. You have to start somewhere. Don't let people get you down. Do little ones where people don't have a lot of money to spend. Let them know your just startng out. Show them some pictures you have taken. That's why you are cheaper then the others. You will get. Better. Keep asking guestions. That's how you learn. There are a lot of people thAt know what they are doing And have very good ideas. Oh Jen make sure you have a card in the camera. Mine has a setting you have to have one in to shoot. Good Luck. Don't be nervous. You will do find. Correct the mistakes and you will get better.
