Here's the interior of the Sheraton Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. If you notice the composition, you can appreciate how closely I embraced the rule not to drop the camera over the railing... :-)

For Xmas, I got a "Vello Wireless Shutterboss" remote switch with digital timer ($99.50 at B&H - RCW-C1) and it does everything you might want from time lapse to extended "Bulb" shots from upto 250 feet away. I use it all the time on my Canon T2i and obviously like it a lot.

Thanks Tom. And I did look at this one (Vello) and also the Trigger Master on Amazon for 39.95. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks for your Help.

Look at the reviews if there are any... When I was looking for a trigger it seemed to me that $100 was a good price for a wireless trigger so I get skeptable when there is a big reduction - there must be a reason...

I purchased the Canon battery grip initially with a previous Canon camera but, then I found a less expensive aftermarket brand Zeikos. I read their reviews and was content with my purchase.

Tina, was the body of the Canon Grip made of plastic like the Zeikos or is it made of metal? I also have the Zeikos and like it...

Thank you all for your replies...

Let me ask another question - on full frame cameras, would a 400mm Canon lens capture the same (or very close to the same) image as a 400mm Nikon (or any other make)?

Thanks,

Tom

My reference to "Marco" lenses comes from using a Vivitar zoom lens 40 years ago. You could push a button and twist the lens into "Macro" mode which would allow you focus to within about 2 inches and out to infinity using the zoom. So I assumed (we know what that means) that I could get a 50mm Macro lens and get right on top of a bug to get the close up shots we see here. But...

I went to the Canon website and looked up a 50mm Macro lens and noticed that the minimum focal distance is 10.something inches and that the minimum focal distance of my 18-55mm Canon kit lens is 9.something inches - about 1 inch closer than the macro. So, now I have no idea what exactly a macro lens does... What would be the difference in a shot of a bug with a 50mm Macro from 12" away vs. the same shot with my kit lens set at 50mm?

If you have read this far, here is question #2. My camera is a Canon T2i with a APS-C sensor with a 1.6 crop factor. So my other kit lens is a 55-250mm zoom and at 250mm it is supposed to be the same a 400mm (250 x 1.6= 400) on a full frame camera. My question #2 is: would a picture from my camera of, say, an office bldg window at 250mm be the same as the same picture taken with a 400mm lens on a full frame camera?

Maybe my real question is; Are all "mm's" created equal?

Thanks,

Tom

I am an amateur and have always been intrigued to learn more and have a coach at my fingertips. I'm curious if you've had experience, good or not so good in regards to NYIP? Perhaps you've used another online course to truly dive deep and hone your skills--if so, would love to hear about the experience, learning and cost.

Thanks---Jeff

I have no experience with the schools but when I got my T2i and read the manual, I was convinced that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. The camera was way smarter than I was... I got on YouTube and discovered Karl Taylor (www.karltaylorphotography.com). He offers a free basic course and then some CDs that are pretty good. He explains things while he is actually doing them. He advertises on this site often...

You got great shot!!! I love it. It should rank near the top if not the very top in this contest. I'm on the West side of Mt. San Jacinto, just opposite from Palm Springs.

I took this picture Friday night before the eclipse, a few minutes after 6 PM. When I took it, I didn't even notice the airplane and its contrail. until I openend it up on my computer monitor. The plane was flying high enough to be illuminated by the Sun.

Lucky shot...
Nikon D7000, Nikon 70-300mm

You didn't stage the airplane??? I think there is a lot of luck in all good pictures...

Thanks to all

Great shots, my bladder actually got me up in time to see it in the same phase of the eclipse that you have captured here. If you dont mind me asking, what was your zoom at on this?

I used the Canon 55-250mm Kit lens and it was set at 250mm and the picture was cropped. My previous full moon shots were just a little fuzzy around the edges which was caused by having AF & IS on, "Live View" off and using a $39.00 tripod with a plastic head that would shake when anybody got close to it. For these pics I tightened everything as tight as I could and the result was much improved.
