If your camera has a SPORTS mode try using that. It will use the fastest sutter speed combined with continious shooting and AI SERVO focus.

If not, try continious shooting with the fastest shutter speed you can use with apature 16 or 22 and still get a good exposure. Also AI Servo focusing mode. When you see the birds just hold the shutter button down and fire away while panning across with the bird. You should be able to get some good shots.

Good luck

So you are saying that every Nikon camera ever made is still working and none have ever had any problems? Wow, you have made me a believer! Does anyone want all my Canon equipment since it obviously is nothing but junk?

I keep hearing about the Canon loyalty program but cannot find anything about it on the Canon website. Can someone explain what it is and how it works please?

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the Canon 77mm Circular Polarizer PL-CB vs B&W or Hoya? Seems like if they can make good lenses they should be able to make good filters.

Okay all you Canon "experts", I am looking for a fast lens for inside use. I have narrowed it down to the Canon EF 50mm f /1.2L USM or EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. I am using a 50D but plan on getting a 7D in the fall. Any thoughts or experiences with either of these? Money is not an issue. Nikon users, while I appreciate your input I am not looking to change brands.

Since you were planning on doing indoor shooting, I would think that the shorter focal length (50MM) would give you a better field of view. The 85 MM lens would be a 136 MM equivalent lens or about a 2.72 X telephoto. This might me to much for indoor scenes. The 50 MM would be an 80 MM equivalent or 1.6 X tele and might work better. Have fun!

I have a crop sensor and shoot the 85mm f1.8. It is too much for inside. Great at gyms and stadiums but not in a house. For the 7D indoors, I suggest the 50mm. I think that would be best even in a Jazz club. Love the prime lens and recommend it. 85mm needs lots of space to work with. Even a basketball court can get crowded with the 85mm at times.

Thanks for the input CAM. I think you have made my decision.

I have been shooting weddings for over 30 years now. I carry two cameras . . one with a 24-70 F/2.8L on a 1.6 crop sensor camera . . . the other with a 70-200 F/2.8L IS on a 1.3 crop factor camera. Both are killer lenses and between them give me an uninterrupted range of 24 to 200 mm.

My absolute favorite lens is the 70-200 which I use for all my formals . . . outside . . . and the church indoors. Unfortunately it is very limited indoors. I still use it indoors for "sniper" shots as it is by far the better portrait lens of the two and I get those special candid emotional shots without being noticed.

A big part of the answer to your question is what you will be shooting as you can tell from when I can or cannot use the longer lens.

If a person was only going to have one lens, and didn't need the extra speed of the F/1.2 L . . . I would have to recommend the 24-70 F/2.8L. 20 or 30 years ago I would have recommended the "prime" . . . but the quality today is so close on the zooms.

I have the 24-105 f4 but not fast enough. I also have the 70-200 2.8. Is it worth it to get the 24-70? Looking for something for good family pictures, not snapshots. Also up close photos in jazz clubs & such.

Just my opinion but..... with money for one lens of the two not being an object here is what I would do. Get the 85 AND the 5mm f/1.4 (nifty fifty). That's so close to getting both your original choices for the price of one how could you NOT? The nifty fifty will likely add $125 to the price of the 85mm and give you a perfect combination. so if you can afford the 85mm + $125 it's a no-brainer in my mind.

Thanks for the recommendation. This may be the way to go.

I'm sure Carbonite is an excellent service, but for me there is no better way than a 3-5X RAID, with each level at a minimum of 1tb and preferably 3tb. There are numerous "mirroring" programs that can be adapted to RAID and cyclic backup.

What you have is the best for on-site back-up and security but if you have a fire, flood or hurricane (live in south Florida) you want to have an off-site back-up as well. Carbonite or one of several others are the way to add an extra layer of protection.
