Gene51 has it right. Nobody ever complains that the camera itself is doing too much post processing, and that is done by the internal software written by someone who never saw the scene. Post processing is the only way we have of conveying the mood/emotions we had when viewing the scene.

I use full frame for landscape (wide angle and short/medium tele) and crop sensor for wildlife (telephoto reach--600mm on full frame becomes 960mm on crop sensor).

I mis-stated the range of the Tokina I use. It is 16-28mm, f/2.8 for full frame cameras. It is a very good lens (the only non-Canon L lens I own) and sells for less than $700. The primary lens tester for Canon and Nikon lenses at Naturescapes.net (http://naturescapes.net/) rates it as better than the Canon 16-35 2.8 but slightly behind the Canon 16-35 f/4. You can find what he considers the best Canon and Nikon lenses on that site.

True. But you don't have to lie on the ground. It suffices to kneel on the ground.

I think that is a tri-colored heron. The little blue heron does is all blue, doesn't have the white feathers on the back of the head nor the lighter color between the head and beak. However, that is still an excellent heron image! Thanks for sharing.

Do you travel with your laptop or ipad (or similar)? It you have a mail program with you, you can always share your images with email. That's what I do when I'm traveling.

I agree with Gene51. If you buy the right tripod it will be sufficient for whatever equipment you use. Someday you may have a 600 f/4 lens which weighs close to 12 lbs. You want to buy a tripod that will support whatever equipment you might acquire in the future. That way it will be the only tripod you will have to buy. Save the one you have for when you have to travel light with smaller lenses.

I use the Tokina 16-26 f/2.8. It is very good and it covers full frame.

The lens does not cause the graininess. That is caused by the sensor (especially with higher ISO).

The 18-135 has a pretty good reputation. If you are making 20 x 30 prints it might have some problems.

I use the right-angle finder on my Canon cameras when I would otherwise have to lie on the ground to compose and focus. It also has a magnifier in it to use for checking focus (useful for macro).

I use an old toothbrush to get around the dials and buttons.

The problem is that independent repair folks probably can't get the parts either. I had that problem with a 1.4x teleconverter.

[quote=Nikonian72]How far is the trek from parking area?

It took about 25 minutes to get there in the dark, and about 10 minutes to get back to the parking lot in daylight. If you plan to go there, it might be a good idea to go out in the daytime the day before, so you know how to get there in the dark.

Walked to the site in total darkness and only fell flat once. I was amazed at what the sunrise did to the arch. I did not add any saturation to the top of the arch. It was that bright and saturated. If you want to photograph this (about 20+ miles from Moab) you have to get there early. It was still totally dark when I got there and there were already about 20 people waiting for the sunrise.
