But check the photo books and you see a camera which looks like it is 20 feet tall. With film that size to photo for a Worlds' Fair in the 19th century. I am sure that tops any sensor even something with NASA?--film can always be larger---ew

Sometimes a little humor should put a smile on everyone's face. You are right that this is a big sensor and would take almost 400 4K monitors to display the proper resolution. That was my point, it is a race to reach the infinite megapixel sensor.

Comparing film to digital is like comparing a washboard to a washing machine; which cleans better? I love film, but digital's advantages of handling and instant gratification amongst others, are undeniably huge advantages. I believe film has found its niche and the two mediums will coexist happily ever after. Don't give up, please keep sending those geat images taken with film; I noticed all the readers are enjoying these images and the comparison between film and digital will be ongoing. I hope I stayed on the subject this time.

In case you all forgot, here is a sensor that will compete with Ansel Adams 8x10 images. I concede it is a bit difficult to lug this one around. Nevertheless, endless megapixel cameras exist and the sky's the limit (no pun intended).

Awesome duplicate finder is still listed as one of the ten best after over a decade of being out. Drawback: It does look at raw files. The program is free.

https://www.ashisoft.com/ is powerful but does not offer the flexibility of awesome file finder. It does search raw files, thought.

That program is only for Widows; any suggestions for a Mac?

I found google photos to be more useful the ICloud. The pictures download in full resolution and are available on any computer by accessing the website. I also group some photos in folders for managing the subject of multiple images in one place. The Google search algorithms work great, but not as good as making sure all pictures of something I like to group are in one folder. It’s also easier to share folders than individual images.
The phone pictures download in the background and are available relatively fast on Google Photos site. I also download pictures from my cameras to maintain a reliable redundant file of all my images.

I believe someone said that they are good until you try to enlarge them past a certain point and then the deficiencies start to show up. Makes sense.

Most of the time pictures from a phone do not get enlarged past that certain point. But I must confess, that “certain point” is way past the needs of most of the pictures we display.

Therefore I don’t think that the limitations of enlarging a picture from a phone is an obstacle.

My original post on August 29 unintentionally and unexpectedly started a wide-ranging (15page), sometimes interesting, discussion. It was really meant only as an observation, nothing more.

That discussion confirms what we already knew, that most of us use BOTH mobile phones and dedicated, sophisticated cameras, generically described as “dslrs.” The choice often depends on a variety of factors, some of which are: “which is most readily available when the photo opportunity arises?”, “what is my target today?”, “is this a dedicated photo shoot?”, etc.

While obviously I am not arguing for or against the use of mobile phone cameras, I will say to those of you who dismiss a high quality mobile or cell phone camera as one only for “snapshots,” you should look at the results of the annual Mobile Photography Awards. Talk about “art” and “quality”! Also see Ken Rockwell’s extraordinarily positive review of the IPhone 12 Pro Max.

So, coming full circle and without trying to discover the EXIF data, which, IF ANY, of the four photos in my original post, do you believe were taken with an IPhone 12 Pro Max or with a Canon 80D with an EF 100-400mm f/4-5-6L IS II USM lens? For your convenience, I have attached the four photos again here.

After time for replies, I will post the answer if you are interested.
My original post on August 29 unintentionally and ... (show quote)

I can’t tell the difference of your pictures. I love my 12 pro Max. It’s with me all the time. I also love better my Nikon Z. But since I can’t fit into my back pocket, most of my casual pictures are with the iPhone. When I carry both cameras I use the Z. Then when I put the pictures all together, I am not sure which pictures came from which camera; therefore both cameras win.

Using only the label of the file will miss a lot of pictures. I can’t see going through thousands of images looking for a duplicate name. The idea is to display any duplicates in a separate file or window; then it’s easy to go through the duplicates only without the burden of the other images.

There is no way you will be able to visually scan duplicate names with 30,000* pictures; even if the duplicates are in sequence. Unless you have endless time and patience, which I don’t have either.

I think the best method is to display the duplicate pictures, either one pair at the time or several and then decide to delete or not. The insurmountable issue is to identify the duplicates; deleting them manually is generally an easy task. Ideally the software should scan all the photo files and store the duplicates for removal.

You are right, I decided not to download this, it had a free trial but then nowhere to be downloaded unless I paid.

Duplicate photos are the nemesis of my storage capacity and I wish I could find something that works; so far no luck.
With 30,000+ images on my HD, it would be an endless operation to delete the duplicates manually.

That photo should convince you that the iPhone camera is superb but still requires a great photographer. I have the 12 pro max and with the three lenses it provides great flexibility. I use the phone as often as my Nikon Z. Most of the time I can’t tell the difference between the Z and the 12, especially looking at the images on a monitor or even on my 75” big screen. I know I will get flak for this statement and will be told my eyes are poor. But the image quality is in the eyes of the beholder.

Thanks for the push. A few more of these, and I'll start shopping.

I will push you to start shopping. Old or new or good excuses are no excuses not to go shopping for a new camera; the joy of photography is when you get new toys. Then you can come back here and tell us all about it.

Why is everyone knocking smartphones that can do things well? I know the traditional cameras are nicer to hold and look better around your neck, but they are useless if you leave them home. Sure I like to take pictures with a camera, but I don't carry one around 24/7. I love all my Nikons, including the Z line, but I would be in wheelchair if I carried them all the time. I am sure most people have had times when they left their camera(s) at home; this does not occur with a smartphone. Of course you can forget your smartphone, but chances are it's always with you. So why knock a Swiss Army knife that can take great pictures. I agree that camera manufacturers need to lead in features, seems like smartphone manufacturers are outsmarting the camera boys; I suppose that's why they call them "Smartphones". Camera companies are not doing as great and are instead finding more niche markets to sell their cameras; they are certainly trailing in features that makes the taking-picture-task really dumb. I will always use a full size camera instead of a smartphone, but I must admit that I have taken great pictures with my Iphone that competes with the full size cameras; only because I had left my camera at home and was still able to capture the moment.

One more comment, I installed an app that can control all the exposure functions on my Iphone; truth is I never use it, too complicated. That's the point of a smartphone.

Oh yes, I have video on both and once in while, I am glad it's there. Nice to watch a short clip in some instances rather than a still image. I call this quality and choices of a photographer's life. Funny, I only use video on the phone not the camera, go figure such habits! Last time i wanted to use video on my camera, I forgot how to initialize it; too many buttons. By the time I found the video button, the opportunity to capture it vanished. Thank G'd for smartphones.

Now let's get a life and let everyone enjoy all these wonderful gadgets that have made our lives so complicated.
