Another issue is the wisdom of entrusting that much data to ANY one single medium. Spreading data over multiple media means you don't lose EVERYTHING if that one medium fails.
It's common sense that goes way back. In hard drive terms the saying has been "How much data do you want to entrust on one spindle".

One giant drive, flash or hard, is riskier than using multiple smaller ones.

Just because it is possible to make super-large drives, it doesn't mean they are the best strategy. Unless you are backing them up regularly.

Cure vs vaccine...

To me the cure is more important than a vaccine.
So far it seems that once you get the virus and are cured there is no proof that you will not get it again. WHO is even warning about this.

Than makes me wonder if the vaccine - if one is found - is worth anything. The purpose of a vaccine is to train the body to react against a virus. Seeing the successive warning about being to get it again and again - meaning that the body has not learned to defend itself - what is the point of a vaccine?

Is not a vaccine made to prevent getting ill from the virus by exposing the body to a weakened or dead virus so that it learns from exposure???

If a person who has survived the first round is exposed again and that person's body has not learned anything... What is the point of a corona vaccine???

1. A vaccine for a specific virus does not absolutely 100% guarantee that you cannot be infected by that virus.

2. Viruses can mutate, so if you are vaccinated against a specific strain, you can still be infected by another strain.

Ever hear of annual flu vaccines? They are formulated for the specific viruses that are expected to be a problem each year. There are many more flu viruses that are NOT part of the vaccine package each year.

Did anyone else see the ad and purchase the 2 TB thumb drive that was advertised recently? I bought these -- these were advertised buy one, get one free. I couldn't believe a 2 TB thumb drive! So they came in the mail yesterday -- two of them for 39.95. I plugged one in to see if it even booted up, and to my surprise it did. Now with almost 4 TB of storage space I can back up virtually all my photos on a drive that doesn't have a spinning disc and won't be apt to crash. If they are still available I may order two more!

Keeping a lot of data on a thumb (flash) drive isn't the best idea long-term in any case. They crash too. They also break, get dropped, lost, etc. A Flash drive should not be the only place your important data lives.

Hi members,

This is a problem for any videographers out there.

I have a SONY DSC-RX100mk4 camera. Absolutely wonderful little gem for what l do, which is mostly 4K video.

When l'm on a trip, at the end of the day l transfer the day’s filming onto my computer and then format the SDcard so that it is clean and fresh ready for the next day.

For still pictures, the numbering by the camera continues from where it ended – no problem. But for videos it resets back to zero and this causes me a problem.

When l am back home l will start producing a video of the trip and will import all my video clips into one of my video editing programs. With several days worth of filming with a “fresh” SDcard my production ends up with several days worth of duplicated numbering. This causes the software to get confused.

Does anybody know of a work around for this?

Big thanks for any help.

Can you not just take a few seconds and rename the file after moving it to the computer? A name that identifies/describes the video seems more useful than whatever name the camera generates anyway.

I don't collect them per se but I also don't do PDF's or computers very well. So much easier for me to simply have the little booklet in my camera bag to look at when I want to see it. I don't disagree with any of you who like the PDF versions, phone records and so on. I am proud of you all for being able to do that. But if I have a choice I like something I can pick up and not the phone.

Thanks to you all,

Dennis

Get used to viewing PDFs for goodness sake. If you are able to use a computer to, say, participate in UHH or anything else for that matter, what in the world is hard about opening a PDF file?

Mike Butkus' photography manual website is the best thing to ever happen for users of old equipment. You just can't find paper manuals for this stuff.

I download and print manuals all the time from Butkus.

I have two Seconic Light Meters, Model L-28 c2. I am wondering if anyone might have an extra instruction manual for this model they would part with.

ALSO one of the meters is missing three itty bitty tiny screws that hold the nameplate to the back of the meter OR know the size and where I might obtain the appropriate screws (3).

I have not checked with Seconic yet but thought someone might have these items.

I am trying to transfer some images from my smartphone(lg rebel 4) to my pc,but the transfer program I used called phototransfer transferred the images ok to my pc ,but they were of extremely poor quality; pixelated, magnified etc.
So what is the best method to transfer images as described above to a pc(or flash drive)) which will be of good quality. I am using windows 10. I want to do this to increase my cellphones internal memory. Does it make any difference in final image quality whether you use a wi-fi transfer or a usb cable technique. And if a usb transfer is recommended what type of usb cable do you use. Thanks! And I hope all is well with all my fellow uhhers!!

1. You use whatever USB cable fits the connector on your phone....likely a USB A-to-microB.

2. Transferring by wifi or USB to your computer (including a flash drive) should not have any effect at all on file properties.

3. You DO NOT NEED any app or program to transfer from phone to computer. Not even the Your Phone app that's part of Windows.
On my Android you go to Settings---->Connected Devices--->USB and tell it to Transfer files. Then, the phone will show up in Win10 File Explorer as a drive. Open it and browse to the DCIM folder (just like connecting a camera via USB).

If I buy an item from an individual on ebay thru an auction, then ebay is just the go between. They do not collect nor disperse any money so why are they allowed to add Sales tax to the total ?l

eBay is not being ALLOWED to add sales tax. eBay is REQUIRED to add sales tax. Like any other online merchant. They aren't doing it because they WANT to.

States will figure out how to collect taxes. Since eBay is a central go-between, it's convenient to make them do the collecting.

Why doesn't everyone just STOP condemning online merchants for doing what they are REQUIRED TO DO BY STATES? If you still buy from someone who does not collect the sales tax, they are either slow to implement the law or are just plain violating the law and haven't gotten caught yet.

Or, they're complying with tax laws but are making it look like they aren't "charging" sales tax so you will buy from them, and they eat the tax amount they have to remit to the state from their profit. That is perfectly legal. They are just discounting the selling price by the tax %.

That's the marketing gimmick B&H Photo came up with their "tax-free" credit card. They will make up some of the discount they are "giving" you from the very high interest rate on your credit card balance if you don't pay it off each month.

eBay doesn't charge sales tax, they collect it for the state. My question is, how much does the state receive and how much does eBay keep.

In New York (where I ran a small business, collected sales tax on purchases and remitted them to the state annually) the business you're buying from is allowed to keep a small percentage of the collected taxes when remitting them to the state. It's not much. Intended to "pay" the merchant for acting as the state's collection agent.

You can ask your state tax department or a business who collects sales taxes in your state what the percentage is.

The other options allow viewing, but in a separate program, not Windows folders.

OK, guys, part of the full windows install is a set of apps Microsoft adds on. At least one of those (strangely it is named "Photos") can read RAW files and when a new camera with new form of RAW appears you can bet that in the not too distant future one of those Microsoft updates is going to include the changes necessary to read the new form of RAW (at least for the major brands).

Oh, and Google and other major browsers include photo viewing sub apps also.

On a Win 10 machine to check which you are using got to "Settings", then click on Apps, then click on "Default Apps" then go to the type of App and it shows which it is using. If you want to see which choices you have and maybe change your default "doubleclick" on the app and a little window opens with all the viewing apps on your machine and the choice of going to the Microsoft Store to obtain a different one.

I am currently using the one that comes as part of Google Chrome. But I have used the Microsoft supplied "Photos".

One last time, people.....READ THESE ARTICLES at Digital Photography review and HowToGeek.com. Then go to the Microsoft Store to read the full description of the Raw Image Extension for Windows 10.

https://www.dpreview.com/news/2812846720/microsoft-releases-raw-image-extension-to-get-raw-image-previews-on-windows-10

https://www.howtogeek.com/427588/how-to-open-raw-image-files-on-windows-10/

Sounds like if you can view RAW in Windows 10's Photos application, you must have the Raw Image Extension already installed, by you or someone else.

Do you think Microsoft would know whether or not RAW is readable on their OS?
