I moved to Michigan's upper peninsula 23 years ago. my wife and i love it here...and i thank God every evening that you pansy asses moved to florida and arizona...........keeps it nice and under populated. we love it. no traffic jams or rush hour traffic, hardly no crime at all, no lines to get into our favorite restaurants!!

a few weeks ago i was in a line at a local gas station because some numbskull from the south was here buying a snowmobile licence. there were about 3 of us held up. he turned around to me and told me to be patient and how lucky I was because he comes up here every winter. I told him that his tourist business doesn't help me at all. all tourists do is cause price hikes at the pump, at the restaurants, etc....and if he really wanted to do me a favor, then get in his car and go the hell home.

what the hotels, gas stations, and restaurants make around here don't go to me at all.

we have tons and tons of snow and it's great. guess i am not too lazy to shovel it.

i do appreciate the winter humor!!! i am 61 and maybe when i get as old as you pansy asses that moved from the snow, maybe i will move also and become a member of your pansy ass club!! hahahahahaha

so far, so good!!!

i would still say i like the nikon shot a little better than the canon.

i am a big time canon guy, but i am not biased and not blind.

previously i had bought a pair of high end nikon dslrs and lenses. funny thing, but for me the canon felt better in my hands and I prefer the canon menu system and the button layout. nikons flash system is awesome.
i sold the nikon stuff and bought a 6d and a 5dmk3.

mt shooter is a straight shooter and he owns both nikon and canon. he isn't trying to ignite any wars................he is just showing 2 pics shot with same specs.

i previously did the same and nikon beat out canons photos for me almost 100%. i was going to post all the comparison shots, but didn't want the wars to start. i felt the nikons (D800's) definitely shot better photos....but i just didn't like the feel. to each his own. i chose canon as my equipment and am living with it.

but i can take a photo shot with canon and make it pop right off the paper in PP. so i am a happy camper....

but still, as i look at the 2 above shots straight out of the camera, to me the nikon shot is a better shot.

i added all the above info so you would know that i am not a nikon fan boy.

again, thanks MT for this unscientific demonstration.

next set of shots......post the 2 with no info and let uhh members try to label which is the nikon and which is the canon.

(i do that all the time with the 6d and 5dmk3 and my photography buddys can't tell the difference)

mt is doing a service here.....he should be thanked.

that's only darrel young's opinion.

i have seen photos from sony and olympus and pentax cameras that have blown me away.

third best camera in the world is only HIS opinion.

what about leicas and hasselblads.

i respect his opinion, but every user and pro has their opinion as to what is the best and what is the third best.

i rather doubt if he has used every single model there is and without prejudice.

When you participate in a blog about pretty much anything you get a lot of information about the topic and a better understanding of how wars get started.

hahahaha...so very true.

i say, if you like jpg, use it.
if you like raw, use it.

it's all about personal choice.

some people can look at their jpg straight from the camera and say "wow, that's beautiful" and others will look at it and say...colors are flat, parts are covered by shadows, etc....

personally, and this is just my opinion....I haven't seen many photos straight out of the camera that makes me say 'WOW"

whatever you like, you like...and nobody is going to change that.

----------------------------------------

today, with presets in lightroom or camera raw.....you don't really have to spend any time making a photo pop. one click and it's done for most shots.

i would say 80-90% of my shots, i just use a defog action in photoshop. the other 10%, i might spend a little time in PP.

I must not know how to shoot or use my camera, because i sure haven't seen any jpgs straight out of my camera that i would give or show to someone.

Maybe the jpg shooters should post their perfect photos and teach us raw users how to become better photographers. i am always up to learning.

like i said, i haven't seen very many, straight out of the camera jpg shots that make me go "WOW'. i am all for less work.

jpg shooters..please help me learn to take great shots like you do.

i am not being sarcastic..i am serious.

help me....

i would love to shoot just jpg.

also, show me your straight out of the camera jpgs that will make me go "WOW".....

I use a grip because I take a lot of vertical photos (portrait orientation), and since the grip has a shutter button on it placed just right, it's very comfortable to use.

if i didn't take a lot of vertical shots, i probably wouldn't use a grip.

other reasons:
I like the extra weight. I never get a blurred photo due to camera shake.
i can steady a heavier unit.

get a cheap nifty fifty for $100

a 50mm that is 1.8

1.8 at iso1600 will probably give you about 1/80 shutter speed.

can't beat it.

My niece asked me to photograph her wedding. I told them I was not qualified to shoot a wedding. I hemmed, I hawed, I tried to say no in a nice way, but they didn't listen. I've allowed myself to be pressured into it. I've taken pics every time she's around, trying to show her all the mistakes I make, but she doesn't see. I've fought with my mother about it, and even showed her the problems I am going to have because there are things I just don't know. My mother looked straight at me this past Christmas and said, "Well then, you better learn." No matter how much I learn between now and then, I will not be ready. They might be better off with friends taking snapshots with their cell phones. There is so much I don't know. The more I read, the more I dont' know.

I wish I had been a complete and utter Bi*ch when I was asked, and just said no way on God's green earth would I do this. Now I feel more stuck every day. I am so stressed about it. Every pic I post I see the horrible mistakes I am going to make. I can't even edit very well. If there are blemishes, they will have to live with them.

I talked to my brother who is catering the food for the wedding with his wife. I said, aren't you nervous? He said sis, they can't afford a caterer, so they're going to get what we give them, and that's life.

You see, I do not feel like he does. I am going to be devastated when I mess this up. Every video I've watched says to go along as a second photographer to at least 6 weddings before you ever try to take on one by yourself. I called the photographer that did my wedding. Family friend. He doesn't do weddings anymore.

Angel...say no before it's too late. Tell them you'll be glad to work as an assistant to the photographer they hire.

nightski..I am going to be in the vicinity of Saint Clair lake in june for 2 weeks vacation...I'd be glad to give you a FREE hand with the shooting. That would give me an excuse to get away from the family for an evening. (1 week with family is enough vacation...2 weeks will drive me nuts). When is the wedding date? is it in the detroit lakes area? PM me if you would be interested.

jimberton, Great capture, these little guys are hard to catch at this age. I assume you are a Grandpa like me. It is tiring, but look at the bond you are creating. I replied to an earlier post "Our Anna" because I have an Anna as well. I have two sons, one uses me for their portraits, and the other a photography chain mall service. I do not consider myself a great photographer, just another amateur. I like the shots I did for my son and daughter-in-law that they used for their Christmas card, versus the "professional" shots and my other sons Christmas card. The "pros" have more props available, but the use of the ornament was great. Gary

unfortunately i am not a grandpa....but i would sure be proud to have him as a grandson!!

I wish i was a grandpa. i really love kids. This little boy belongs to a beautiful family that had me do their family shots. After me and "terror" became friends.....he asked to shoot his picture under the Christmas tree. All the rest of the shoot was family shots.

funny thing about this shoot is that i was warned by the parents that Killian had tonsilitis and swollen adenoids and he would probably not cooperate for the family shoot. the little guy has to go in the hospital and get them taken out in january. when i arrived, i spent 15-20 minutes wrestling and playing with him.

He had a big smile in every family group shot.

he cried when i left!!!!!

I made a new buddy!!!

We will be doing Easter shots this spring (hopefully outdoors).

I just love kids and they all seem to take to me......maybe because i never grew up (my mother told me i was her only kid (out of 6) that never grew up.

Is that a bad thing?

I always seem to do pretty good with the kids...maybe i should just stick to kid phtography. they are more on my level.

Actually, it's rare where I live, because there is always enough snow to prevent getting a car out onto the lake ice. Once in awhile we'll get long periods of cold before the snow comes (it always comes, like you remember around Chicago). Then the lakes get smooth like hockey rinks. When that happens we get the occasional carfull of teens out spinning doughnuts at 40 to 50 mph. Wouldn't get me out there in a car.

As of 12/16 we have several snow reporting stations listing snowfall for this season at 105" to 130". Snow actually on the ground is over 3'. Can't drive a car to the ice through that!

we have about the same snowfall over here in Bessemer. besides, we have Kromers to keep our heads warm. My wife and i work for the company that makes them in Ironwood!!

and don't forget that we have Da Yoopers for our musical entertainment.

84 degrees is way toooo hot for me. that's why my wife and i moved up here. we like 50's-60's on the high end...cold in the winter is fine with us!!!

i haven't adapted to liking the pasty yet. still don't like them.

Thank you for your thoughts. What I thought was noise I think it is related more to the way I sharpen on the camera and in the Aperture program on my computer. Went overboard in this area. When I start to use some common sense in this area my experience with ISO is like yours. So far I like the 6D and plan on using it mostly with the 24-105mm for general shooting and macro work with a 100mm lens. I have a 60D and plan on using the 100-400mm on it for my birding photography. One interesting thing I learned form this topic was to over expose a little when shooting a dark bird against a bright sky. Will work on that.

the 24-105 is a great lens!!! my friend has one and i have borrowed it to test it. very good and sharp!!!what my friend does is mostly shoot in av mode and turns exposure comp up +.75. his photos are always great. with it being a f4 lens, he shoots a lot with iso 640 and 800. i saw some shots he made of some bmx racing.....he purposely shot 2 stops under to get his shutter speed up. then used lightroom to bring up the exposure. he shot at iso1600, he had a little noise, but the photos were great.

look up serge ramelli on youtube for some free tutorials...he pretty much always shoots underexposed and then he post processes in lightroom and comes up with the most beautiful photos.
