I have a desktop computer that still runs XP, and my favorite laptop runs Win7. Lack of Micro$oft support is like not taking a lawnmower with you when you go swimming. Security is not a major issue, and I don't even use a real-time antivirus app. Instead:
1- I image my system drive 2 or 3 times each week using
Macrium Reflect -- it's free. I image to an external drive (capacity 2 terabytes) and retain images 2-3 months (first-in, first-out).
2- Each night at bed-time I use two on-demand scanners:
Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK), and
HitmanPro (HMP). EEK is free. HMP is not free but offers a free 30-day trial. After 30 days HMP will continue to function just fine, but only as a scanner to find malware. HMP will not clean-away malware unless you buy a subscription. That is NOT a problem because I do my cleaning by restoring an image (item 1), so HMP's cleaning services are unnecessary.
I sometimes enjoy surfing the dark side of the internet so I sometimes (rarely) pick up an infection. When that happens, I simply restore a clean image and POOF! -- suddenly the sun shines, skies are blue, birds warble sweetly, & all is right with the world.

Triskaidekaphobia -- fear of the number 13 (it's a real word).
I have been on many elevators in buildings that are 14 floors or higher, but I have never seen a 13th floor on an elevator's button pad. I assumed that the floors were numbered 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 14 15 etc.
Hmm... would you willingly accept a room reservation on a hotel's 14th floor which is, in reality, the 13th floor?
