The default does not help. I am impressed with the efforts made to help me. The fact that no one knows the correct answer illustrates why it went so cheap but in truth you can fully repair it in about 30 min..bit longer if the chassis is cracked.
I will put a separate post on about how to mend it as that will help more people ..maybe a few broken D800 will come out the cupboard get repaired and traded in ..oops

It was declared as having back focus issues which is why it is cheap ( $280).
But can it be fixed? All lenses

Fine focus adjust spot on for the lens ...Group area focus, auto iso 200-3200, min shutter 1/500, 9 fps with grip, Continuous autofocus. If using JPEG as main or back up set picture control to +9 ( the JPEG images on all Nikons are junk unless you use +9) This will also make the image on the rear screen sharper but will not affect RAW. I have never heard of a focus operation switch unless you are confusing the button on the RHS and main wheel to adjust the focus method. I like the 1.2 crop as you get a big area going read when you hit focus. Don't use a UV filter as it will downgrade the image. Wrap the lens in Gunwrap to protect it for resale and as a camouflage. Look at ebay item 174091720368 to help you .

Has he upped the sharpness in the menu to +9...you say not sharp not out of focus. All nikons come from the factory set soft ...............

For a wedding its useless as you need to hold it in the left hand to move the right hand . You are much better just rotating your wrist. I usually strip out all the electronics and either use the AA carrier for spare flash batteries or put in a GPS tracker . Getting your portrait shots straight is just a question of checking with your eye. You are going to edit crop anyway so whats the problem or do you give your customers shots straight from the camera which is a junk approach.

Get one of the $10 CF to SD adaptors works great and saves all the dual type problems.

The correct Tamron TCX-14 teleconverter was delivered and it was immediately apparent that due to the hunting autofocus it was going back. On some subjects, it snapped into instant focus but for wildlife, it was not going to work. The image quality was not as good as I hoped for but I did not try doing fine focus checks as the hunting was so bad.
