Just bought a very cheap D800 with back focus off the scale ( +40 ) .Is it possible to get it back to normal ?
Are you referring to the AF fine tuning? Nikons only go from -20 to +20. It only works with lenses that have a CPU. I adjust that on my Nikons.
No not the AF fine tune. +20 does not pull it in its right off the scale needing maybe + 40 but of course it dont go that far. any suggestions?

Methinks you have discovered the reason for the low price.

All lenses or just one lens?
Nikon can and will fix it. But they are closed at the moment.
It was declared as having back focus issues which is why it is cheap ( $280).
But can it be fixed? All lenses

Call Nikon when they open again.
No lets mend it without Nikons help ..that the purpose of the question.

I had a Nikon D7000 that had a severe back focusing issue. No amount of AF fine tuning would correct the issue. The same lenses I used on the camera focused accurately on my other camera bodies. It was known that a small number of D7000's had that problem. I ended up returning that one and ordered another one from a different company. The new one was fine - its autofocus was well calibrated.
I've contacted Nikon to see if they offer a AF calibration service. I was told that they don't offer that service. Canon does offer the AF calibration service for $179. I wish Nikon did.
I don't think anything can be done for your camera unless there's a technician who can re-calibrate the AF.
Its a second hand D800 from ebay at only $280 so we need to mend it at home not at Nikon ...anybody have the answer?

The phase detection AF sensors are at the bottom of the camera. It would take a technician with the right tools and training to re-calibrate it.
So it focuses correctly in live view and manually?
yes OK in LV and manual............CO is on the right track.

My only idea in that case is to reload the camera firmware, just as something to try until Nikon reopens, but I wouldn't have high hopes that would work.
