No that wont do it ..its clearly been dropped but the seller would not admit it .
The D800 when dropped tend to crack. It would work OK except for AF.
Correct so how do we mend it ? dont want to turn a $280 camera into $700 with a trip to Nikon.

Some of them is not repairable. There was report on small crack on the D800 (4ft drop) the camera would function normally but AF not accurate. Sent to Nikon they said it's the crack and is beyond repair.

Its a second hand D800 from ebay at only $280 so we need to mend it at home not at Nikon ...anybody have the answer?
Go to camera repair school.
Buy manuals for the D800.
Buy camera repair tools and repair equipment.
Determine needed repairs.
Secure needed parts.
Effect repairs.
I feel your pain. I have gambled on malfunctioning items and came out like a bandit ... and lost my money for a high end paperweight.
I hope I end up being wrong, but I think you bought a paperweight.

Do you already have the estimate?

If that is the case, a replacement of the case or portion might work ... and it might be more money in the hole.

It was declared as having back focus issues which is why it is cheap ( $280).
But can it be fixed? All lenses
I recall reading that the 'Default' fine tune adjustment has a greater span than the 'Individual' adjustment. Try this if as you say the problem is with all lenses.
But you can't sum 'Default' and 'Individual'.

Having just checked this theory out with my D800 and one lens, indications were that span response appears less with 'Default' adjustment.
The default does not help. I am impressed with the efforts made to help me. The fact that no one knows the correct answer illustrates why it went so cheap but in truth you can fully repair it in about 30 min..bit longer if the chassis is cracked.
I will put a separate post on about how to mend it as that will help more people ..maybe a few broken D800 will come out the cupboard get repaired and traded in ..oops

Have you considered manually focusing the lens?

Supposedly you can remove the bottom of the camera, then use the 3 accessible adjustment screws to align the AF sensor module.
An ideal project if you are in lockdown: tweak, mount, do a set of tests,......... tweak, mount, do a set of tests............tweak, mount, do a set of tests............................... repeat until .......................
