IIRC, it used to be common for update software to advise exiting out of, and shutting down, ALL other programs running on a computer before updating any individual program. That was easier to do before the massive speed and memory improvements to hardware made it normal to have LOTS of programs open at any one time. (I'm always amazed to see how many things my Mac closes on those rare occasions when I tell it to Shut Down or Restart.)

So these days I tend to leave things running rather than shut everything down before updating an individual app, but I would NEVER update something that I was in the middle of using. That's just asking for it.

Another concern is whether things that do work under Windows 10 will NOT work under 11. Or won't work the same.

When I upgraded a Mac OS last year I lost the ability to scan to the Mac from the control pad on my 10 year old HP multifunction printer - the driver in the new OS didn't include that functionality. (And neither did a new HP multifunction, which I bought and installed hoping to get that capability back.) When I called HP to inquire about an update to their driver for my old machine they said their printers had a design life of about 5 years, that if mine was still working after 10 I should be thankful, and hung up. (I CAN scan to the Mac using an HP app on the computer, but it's VERY inconvenient when the computer keyboard is in a different room from the printer/scanner. Especially when trying to scan multiple individual pages into a single PDF, which under the old driver just required a tap on the control pad on the scanner after putting a new page on the scanner glass.)

I can still scan directly from the scanner to a Windows box under Win 10, but one thing that keeps me from updating to Win 11 is a fear that I'll lose that direct scanning capability if I do.

Ok Mac users. Keep it to yourself. Nobody here wants to hear it.

Dang. I was about to remind folks . . . Which I see GEngel-usmc does later on.

I still keep a Windows box for Quickbooks and one of the TurboTax programs I need that isn't available in Mac form. When I switched from Win 7 to 10 it took me 2 weeks (not full time, but a lot of time.) First week to identify every program that was installed and be sure they were up to date, back everything up onto several external drives, and make sure I had all the install codes for all those programs. Second week was spent installing the new OS and reinstalling all the programs and data, and making sure everything worked.

When my 10 year old Mac Mini bricked a couple of years ago I went down to MicroCenter, bought a new M1 Mini, slid it into the same under-shelf mounting bracket as the old one, plugged in the multiple external drives (one of which held the Apple Time Machine), dialed up the Time Machine and told it to restore. About 2 hours later I was fully back in business after a total time investment of ~4 hours, 2 of which were equipment purchase and installation and 2 of which were doing something else while the new system rebuilt itself to match the old. Updating a 12 year old Macbook Pro to a new M1 Macbook Air and a 6-7 year old ipad to a new M1 ipad were even easier. I would not have a Windows box if I didn't need the accounting and tax software that only runs on one.

When I was learning to fly in northern California in about 1970, one day my instructor said "look down to your left." There, several thousand feet below us was a flock (herd? whatever?) of snow geese heading north. It looked like a giant white river, undulating slowly side to side down its length while the whole thing moved smoothly up the valley. A sight I'll never forget.

I switched to the Epson Eco Tank system for this past year's Christmas pictures (from the Canon Pro-10s I'd been using for 6 years.) For its price, the 6-tank Epson is a pretty cheesy scanner and copier compared to my 12 year old HP all in one which is still going strong (knocking furiously on wood!!), and its paper trays don't hold much paper. But Epson isn't going to make a lot on their ink going forward, so they can't give away the printers like they used to. And the print quality, output speed and ease and speed of occasionally topping up big ink tanks compared to refilling 10 cartridges in each of the Canons made printing ~1,100 images over 10 days in December (for binding into books that were given to family at Christmas) a real pleasure.

The antitrust laws used to prevent things referred to as "tying arrangements" where the maker of a product required that you use their parts and supplies to keep the product running. I believe it's what made Kodak separate the cost of Kodachrome film and its processing - originally they only sold the film with (Kodak) processing included. I've always wondered why these rules didn't apply to the kind of conduct HP is now engaging in.

I used a pair of Canon Pro-10s for 6 years, making ~1000 B&W prints each Christmas that got bound into books as presents for family. I got excellent results using both Canon OEM cartridges and then refilling them with Precision Colors inks.

One thing I remember being critical to getting the right look is matching the paper selected in the printing software to the paper actually being fed under the print heads. Specifically, forgetting and leaving ordinary printer/copy paper in the machine (after doing nozzle checks, for example) while selecting photo matte paper in the software, produced very light, washed out prints. Selecting one type of photo paper while using another type could also produce unexpected results.

I print using Lightroom Classic, and there are several places to set - or change - the paper choice. Selecting the right paper profile, if your software uses one, would also make a difference in the output.

BTW, those printers sat plugged in but turned off and unused for about 11 months every year - they only got used to print the Christmas books and our Christmas cards, which was all done in December and early January. It was common for both printers to fire up each December with perfect or near perfect nozzle checks the first time. Sometimes it would take one cleaning cycle to get one printer fully up to speed and occasionally it would take two, but it never required a deep cleaning. They were absolute beasts when it came to reliability - if there was paper in the feeder and ink in all the cartridges, they would print a picture when asked to do so. I understand that the Pro-100 is a dye printer, so they're not exactly comparable, but they were contemporaries and aimed at roughly the same market, so I'd be surprised if the 100 were substantially less reliable than the 10.

"No thanks, I had bugs for lunch." Indiana Jones/Temple of Doom

Best line in the worst IJ movie - IMHO. So good I still remember it after all these years. But not good enough to watch the movie again to see it delivered. (Unlike so many of the other great lines mentioned above - I can't count the number of times I've watched Casablanca.)

I've read that these things are written poorly intentionally in order to NOT attract the smarter, more literate folks, but only those who can't tell that it's lousy language. Theory being that even if the smart ones replied, they'd catch on pretty quick that it was a scam and waste the shill's time.
