I have both of the Tamron lenses you list and am very pleased with them. The 24-70 is on my 850 about 60% of the time. The 70-200 about 25%. The remaining 15% is pretty much split between my Nikkor 200-500 and my Nikkor 105 Micro. I have other lenses, but these 4 are by far the most used. As for the 14-24 range, I have not yet pulled the trigger. Based on my research I am leaning toward the Tamron 15-30 G2. Happy shooting and enjoy your 850, it is a remarkable camera.

I recently attended a rodeo that was also an evening event, beginning at 7:30. I used my 70-200 f2.8. I had my 24-70 f2.8, but it never came out of the bag. I was about 8 rows up in the middle of the arena. Good luck and enjoy.

I have a Safrotto case which is perfect for my 200-500 with the lens hood inverted. Snug and secure. Comes with a detachable shoulder sling. Had originally ordered the Lowepro but after several weeks on backorder, found the Safrotto. Very good quality at less than half the price of the Lowepro.

Millennials,

I know, the usual battle is between Nikon and Canon, but this is the 21st Century. I don't need to hear from the gray panthers. This is a different toy. Will those who know please state their reasons for using one smartphone/camera over another? Granted the technology changes rapidly but what camera is better today?

First of all I am a Boomer and this past week I traded in my iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy S10+. My wife and I attended a rodeo over the weekend and I was shooting the events with my D850 and Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2. Late in the show my camera stopped taking pictures...I had filled up the memory card and not anticipating that, I didn’t have an extra on me. I pulled out my new phone and used it to capture the last event.

I was blown away by the images I was getting as it was almost 10:00 PM by this time and the lighting in the arena was not very good. The quality of the pictures was much better than what my iPhone 6 could have done (I’m sure the newer iPhone cameras are much better).

I have the Nikon battery grip on my D500 and love it but hate the price. I'm considering the Vello grip for my D850 but want the same Nikon quality; any suggestions?

I have the Vello grip for my D850 with Wasabi battery and charger and have been very pleased with the combo. Also have the Vello grip for my D500. No problems with either grip; works just like they’re supposed to.

To all you good folks who are planning on going on a cruise...
Please research your choices carefully. The cruise industries are not good stewards of our environment. They falsely consider their corporate profits more important than the places they visit.

Apparently I’m very much in the minority here. I have been on a number of cruises and continue to feel they are the ultimate vacation; you pack your belongings, get on the ship, unpack and let them take you to many places you only dream about while being pampered and waited upon, and dining on gourmet cuisine.

I do agree that anyone considering a cruise should research their choices carefully, but it is a gross generalization to paint the entire industry with the same brush based on the news reports of a single cruise line.

I have sailed on several different cruise lines, but not on Carnival so I can’t speak from personal experience with that line. However, I had decided early on in my cruising that Carnival was a line I would never use, but for other reasons than stated in this posting.

Some may not care for the overcrowding of a venue when a cruise ship is in port, but there are a number of cruise destinations whose economies are almost solely dependent on those cruise passengers.

Ordered my D850 from B&H last Wednesday and received it on Friday.

I use a Sirui monopod. It’s carbon fiber, sturdy and easy to trek around. I love it!

Agree. I use a Sirui P-326 with a Manfrotto 234RC monopod tilt head. Collapses to about 10”, is extremely light weight, but very sturdy. Have used it with my D500 and 200-500.

I have the 10-20 AF-P, which I use with my D500 and it is one of my favorite lenses. I have been very pleased with the sharpness and resultant images. It is very lightweight and is certainly not of the build quality of some other wide angle lenses, but IMHO it is a great value given the price. Several have said that VR is not important for a wide angle and generally that is true. However, I was recently shooting inside an arboretum and to get some of my shots, I had to shoot one-handed and off balance and the VR certainly helped.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. And, yes, it is Cartagena Spain not Cartagena Columbia; I should have been more clear.

Going on a transatlantic cruise in April from Barcelona to Miami with stops in Cartagena, Malaga, Funchal, and Bermuda. Trying to decide which camera and which lenses to take. Have Nikon D500 and D5500 with Nikon (50mm f1.8 G, 18-140mm f3.5-5.6, 10-20mm f4.5-5.6, 200-500mm f5.6) and Tamron (24-70mm f2.8 G2, 70-200mm f2.8 G2, 18-400mm f3.5-6.3) lenses. I shoot mostly nature (landscapes, wildlife, etc.), architecture (indoor and outdoor), as well as whatever else of particular or memorable interest may crop up. Am leaning toward traveling light with the D5500 and the Tamron 18-400 as primary along with the Nikon 10-20 for some indoor Cathedral shots and the 50mm if I need something faster. Thoughts; advice?

Take a look at Nikons own 10-20mm DX lens, only $300 brand new.

Totally agree. I have this lens and although I don't use it often, every time I do I'm amazed at the results. Very sharp and IQ is better than one would expect from a lens at this price point. Super lightweight and pairs very well with my D5500, although most of my shots have been with the D500.
