Sold my 14-24 after having it two yrs and taking only 20 shots have it. Got a 16-35 f/4 for myself at Xmas to use on my F5 and D850.

well I have three and a spare pro 100 in the garage($59 one). And when my Epson XP6000 runs out of ink I'll go buy a new one it's cheaper than the ink.

Here is 2 taken Friday + Yesterday same shot same lens one d500 the other d850. From my computer desk chair my view while I recover from having 2 toes amputated back in May. The third one was taken back in Jan. the last time I was out in the Mtns.

Since you have a Nikon D40 stay with Nikon, so you don't have to buy lens also. If you have AF lenses where you need a focus motor in the camera either a D7200 or D500, if you have the AFS lenses D7500 ,7200, D500 or 5600, but if you want 4k video D7500 or D500. Go to the Nikon page and see what you want and check the Deals page. 5600 starts at $500 and 7500 at $900
