Hi all,

I have an F5 that is in need of repair - specifically the front wheel that controls aperture randomly selects an aperture value when spun. I've tried all of the home remedies to no avail. This is a common problem with these cameras, but I am finding it difficult to find anyone that will repair it.

Anyone have a recommendation? I have called numerous repair facilities and either they only work on DSLR's, or the F5 is not among the cameras that they will service.

Thanks!

Thanks Fotomacher. I called both and neither can fix the camera. I did find somewhere though... Authorized Photo Service of Morton Grove, IL. However, their quote was nearly what another camera costs. That's what happens when parts are scarce. I love that F5, so I will likely get it repaired. Better to know it's fixed than get another that may develop the exact same (common) problem.

The F5 was introduced at $2800. When it's discontinued the price was $1900. Used price is low about $300 to $500. So if you value the camera at used price the solution is just to buy another.

I highly recommend Authorized Photo Service in Morton Grove, IL. They used to be the factory authorized Nikon service center here in the Midwest before Nikon downsized and abandoned us here in “flyover country”. They completely rebuilt my AF 27-70 f2.8 and made it like new very reasonably. You may find that the price you end up paying will be much less than the original quote once they have your camera. They are great people and will treat you fairly.

Midwest Camera Repair in Wyandotte, MI or APS in Morton Grove, IL. I use Midwest since I live in OH and can drive there in about 2 hours.

Thanks Duffy.... that’s where I got my list. Although most on the list do not service film cameras any longer.

I’m packaging it up and sending it along to them this weekend. Only place in the US that I can find who has the parts and is willing to fix it.

I did consider this but might wind up with another one that develops this same issue. Rather spend the money to fix it once and for all and know I have a solid camera. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for letting me know. I am also using an F5 (with data back) and so far there are no mechanical issues with it. Good luck with the repair, hope it will permit you to use the F5 for many more years to come.

perhaps not once and for all. I bought my F5 new and used very little. I am concerned about the 2 wheels and the rubber covering so I am very careful about them but that doesn't warranty those problem won't happen. Those parts are not durable at all.
