Ah, loved Pismo beach; went clamming there in the 40s from Maricopa; but, alas, it's grown, like the rest of California and doesn't have the charm in did back then.

A trip like this in the north depends upon how you want to see things; early Spring is early in the north and there will still be snow around in altitude; some venues or roads may still be closed; we took a month long trip out and around a few years ago in late May early June --- Crater Lake and Lodge had just opened the day before we stayed there and you still couldn't drive around the lake yet for their still clearing the roads; the visitor's center on I94 in North Dakota also had just opened the day before when we stopped by ---- down south their opened all year. We visited Yellowstone from the west entrance in Idaho in late fall one year, that was only entrance open, all the others were closed and that one soon would be for cars. So just be aware of the differences because of weather between northern and southern trips. On a trip like that you can take more pictures than you can digest and when home wish you had visited something else along the way. Enjoy, you won't be disappointed.

I usually use Sharpshooters technique --- it's in the noggin' somewhere --- been doing that for some 65 years as it works for me; most all places I revisit have a season for revisiting; either a time of day or a time of year, fall, winter, spring, whatever. And, to be quite frankful, after visiting a favorite spot for years you grow tired of it as you have so many pictures already in your files that you're ready for a new adventure somewhere else.
My philosophy has been that at any given time at any location in the universe a perfect picture is waiting to be taken.
Use whatever works for you,

I like the idea of a curio cabinet; we all have old stuff laying around; could have our own version of a museum or an antique store, however you'd want to refer to it; I have a whole cabinet drawer full of old camera gear for bookends - have over ten bookcases full of books now I hardly ever look at and a lot more in boxes in the garage - gotta love old cameras and books!

Thanks for sharing;
I'm in the process of slowly photographing such signs on the highways and byways of our great country; not sure what I'm going to do with the pictures though; I know some will be useful in my family genealogy work. And such are of course available on the internet in various places etc; Oh, for the chase of trying to capture history in a unique and enjoyable way. I've attached an example from a recent trip to Pigeon Forge during Thanksgiving (a week before the fires engulfed Gatlinburg).
I've thought of UHH and Facebook as examples; any ideas?

Back in the early 60s as a student at Oregon State did a lot of 10-speed road bike riding; one of the fun trips to do was to go up to Alsea Summit on the Alsea Highway, Hwy 34, out of Philomath and race the logging trucks down the mountain. While we could outdo them on the initial steeper parts before they passed near the bottom, it was really more fun just to draft them on the way down. And while I did some photography during those years none of logging trucks or this particular fun thing to do. And yes, meeting a logging truck on a dirt road in the Redwoods in northern California is indeed an experience!

What's really sad is that we have all of this environmental this and environmental that put upon us, some good, some not so good, and the big boys are willing to dry up an entire very large lake habitat -

methinks this red rose would be beautiful on just a black background and perhaps softened just a bit???
But contrast of a sharp red rose and black background also
beautiful -
Ah, the eye of the beholder -

I love B&W's; they force you to look at the subject of the photo instead of all the extraneous other features; this is a beautiful set

For my D7100 I use a Nissin Di866 when I need more light -
and a SB-400 for closer work -
I find the 866 a bit easier to use - and highly recommend it.
I got mine at a local photography store where it was recommended -
Like lenses and cameras, flashes are fitted for the project -

While a newbie here, I've been photographing for over 50 years;
It's usually not to difficult to spot old film photos that have been 'scanned' for posting although I must admit that DSLR settings and post processing can make that difficult.
I also don't bother much with post processing - I try to set the camera right to begin with to get the effects I want and go for it - DSLRs are very flexible in that regard - I can get more effects out of a DSLR than I ever could out of film and a darkroom.
Maybe 1 out of 1000 is good enough for me to enlarge to put a framed on the wall - and those are usually scenics for me.

Thank you phal84 for the visit and comments. Welcome to UHH. What a wonderful suggestion you have made. You are so right about the all the local memorials around the country. Given the number of photographers here on the forum we could get a collection from across the country. We have a memorial wall here in Mount Airy and one of the high schools built a memorial as well. I think I will go out and capture those. Back in September I photographed a memorial in Hillsville, VA that I did not really do anything with. I can pull those images back up and process them for a local grouping of memorials. We need to remember those who have fought to ensure the freedoms we all enjoy.
Thank you phal84 for the visit and comments. Welco... (show quote)

Strange that you should mention the Mount Airy memorial -
we were just up that way to High Point, NC to visit our son and we drove around to sight see including Mount Airy and stopped by the memorial downtown; I've attached several photos of such -

Thank you for the beautiful set of pictures commemorating our D-Day Veterans!
Perhaps we photographers out there ought to start submitting pictures of all the veteran memorials around the country/world;
we have several nearby in north Alabama/southern Tennessee I could do real quickly; seems like most counties have a veterans memorial near the the town square, courthouse or elsewhere; not to mention historical markers for the Revolutionary War, Civil War, military museums, camps, posts, arsenals, forts, cemeteries, etc.
Just a thought ----
