FYI - Just posted (Jan. 4, 2019, at 6:14 pm) some more gull pictures in the images gallery under the title "Gulls caught in flight - some interesting images".

Here is one of the images. I hope you will venture there to take a look at the rest.

Thanks for looking.

Previously posted some gull pictures in the Birds-in-flight/Birds-on Water forum, under the title "Some gulls up close and personal" (Jan. 1, 2019), so I decided to post this images here for a little change.

Why gulls? Because for a few crumbs of bread they cooperate with me.

The challenge is to get the right image with correct exposure and proper focus. If this were done with film I would be broke because one of the three challenges is typically not met in all but a very few images. Here are the very few where I think the challenge has been achieved.

My goal is to catch the gulls in unique aspects of flight that we are unable to see because they happen so fast.

Tech - all taken with Olympus EM-1 MK II, 40-150mm f/2.8 at ISO 800, between f/4 and f/5.6, between 1/5000 - 1/8000, and -0.3ev, using the Pro Capture feature.

Constructive C&C welcome.

Enjoy,

Gary

Not many BIF around so had to settle for what was available at the local marina - gulls. A little bread and they are more than willing to oblige with some low passes. Taken late afternoon/not quite golden hour. The first three are the same gull in a 3-image sequence. The fourth image is interesting because of the reflection of the water on the underside of the gull.

Taken with Olympus EM-1 MKII and 40-150mm f/2.8 zoom using pro-capture setting.

Constructive C&C welcome.

The low angle with the first three works wonderfully. Very engaging shots!

Linda has it right. The low point of view allows the blue sky to provide color contrast so the birds stand out. I tell my students: move up, move down, move left, move right and look for other viewpoints.

Wham, I wish I could take credit for this, but it was that happy circumstance where the cranes were up on a bit of a rise, and the car was a bit lower. I had to get the shots quickly before they left, so that was the perspective for the first three. Just being as close as I was was good enough for me.

Glad you enjoyed them.

Cruising around in the early morning in the cornfields near Seymour, IN, last week, came around the bend, and there in front of me were quite a number of Sandhill Cranes in the field feeding away. Closest I have ever been to them - about 30 years or so. Thankfully they did not spook right away. I had about two minutes of picture taking before they decided to move on. Quite a thrill to say the least.

Getting good images of Sandhill Cranes is frustrating as they are usually too distant in the fields or too high when they fly over. Yesterday they were very low when they flew over.

The sun was very bright and behind me, and really accented the red of their heads. There was no color adjustment in case you are wondering.

tech - Olympus EM-1 II 40-150 f/2.8 with 1.4 converter 1/4000 f6.3 ISO 800 then cropped

Two years ago I also was looking for a pair of binos to take while doing nature photography and, like you, my search lead me to focus on Nikon. I handled the Nikons in-store, and found them to be suitable, but they were out of my price range. Then I came upon a website that had solid recommendations for Carson binoculars. Their specs met my needs and the were less expensive. I purchased the TD-842ED model. They are water proof and nitrogen filled, bright, and easy to get and hold focus. Check them out at www.carsonoptical.com and click on the "binoculars" button at the top left. You can check them out at B&H Photo (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/924901-REG/carson_td_842ed_8x42mm_3d_binocular_with.html?sts=pi-ps), which is where I purchased mine from. Hope this helps.

I really like the moodiness of the third shot. Of them all, that's my favorite. I'd like to see it with the branches and leaves cropped or cloned out, though not cropped too tightly. Part of what makes it a nice shot is all the negative space.
The shots of the heron and duck flying in tandem are interesting, but...
The first, second and fifth shots... were you shooting through a dirty window or something? The vertical "stripes" bother me.

I tried cropping out the leaves at the bottom but did not like the dimensions of the image after cropping. Perhaps I will try cloning them out.

The vertical stripes are reflections of trees in the lake. Nothing that I could do to eliminate them.

Here are a few BIF from the last few days. Since the temperature has been in the 30's the past few mornings, and the water on the nearby lake is still in the 60's, it makes for some nice mist until it warms up.

The first two with the duck and GBH were pure luck. The GBH took off and I started shooting it, and all of a sudden the duck appeared in the frame, matching the GBH wing speed and position for about 1 second.

The third is of two ducks before the mist burned off.

I will let you decide what to make of the fourth image.

Fifth image is flock of geese landing in the mist.

constructive C&C welcome.

All shot with Olympus EM-1 mkII with 40-150 f/2.8 zoom and 1.4 converter.
