I shoot grandson's football and soccer. Mostly use a 28x300 and find a lot of use at the 300 end for across the field shots. I also find the 3D focus tracking useful as it allows you to concentrate on a single player on a field crowded with other players.

Faster lens will be useful under stadium lighting as higher ISO's bring a lot of noise that needs lightroom attention afterwards.

It may be my eyes, but another photographer and I did a test. We shot a tiled roof at about 100 yards away with two different cameras. My Fuji and his Nikon both at 200mm, f8, ISO: 200, @ 1/600 SS. hand held.

We shot both scenes first with IS on, then with IS off. Our conclusion after comparing the two in post at 1:1 view that at this speed the shots with the IS turned off were noticeable sharper. This was true from both camera.

Try this for yourself on something like a tiled roof or objects that have a pattern of consistence.

This of course is only my opinion. Thanks, Boone.

Boone, was your camera focusing when you pressed the shutter release or were you using BBF?

The P600 is awesome in its stability at full zoom probably as good as a camera gets. It could be more rugged, especially for a 17 year old. If she will take great care of it, the P600 is a joy to take pictures with. If she handles it like a point and shoot, the D5100 may last longer.

Let me get this straight the camera came out in 2012 and you have shot some 5,000 pics per year. You ain't taking photographs you are shooting video!

Sorry Sarg but I don't understand your comment. I have had the camera for two years and I have shot 18,000 photos. How does that relate to shooting video?

If you are a Nikon user (maybe others) with a mac computer, here is a quick and simple way to view your shutter count.

1. Open the image using 'Preview'
2. Click 'Command' and 'I' keys together
3. In the window that opens up, click on the middle tab with the label 'i'
4. Click on the 'Nikon' tab
5. The camera shutter count is number five on the list of items.

Shutter count has been mentioned here a few times and I can't find any signs of it in the menus on my D-800. Can someone help me find my count? I use consecutive numbering, so I know it is over 14,000, but does the camera keep this info where I can get to it?

I have a D300 as a backup to my D800. The 300 is a very rugged beast and I wouldn't hesitate to get it at $200. I too used it on occasions as a fill flash if I had a short lens on, but would normally use a more powerful flash that is triggered by the flash in the camera. This command mode should work and I would test it before shelling out $200.

What I forgot to mention is that I like the raw output of CC that goes directly into LR.

Thanks for this review. I just updated CC and tried the Merge to HDR instead of Photomatix. Your conclusions look spot on.

I use Adorama Pix for prints larger than my 13" Epson printer will allow and particularly like the prints on metal. Anyone else have experience with them?

Shooting multiple images and combining in an HDR tool will give good results. I agree with BillH about no direct light on a window or part of a window.

When I saw the Hedgehog Cactus, I thought of all of you on the forum so I have attached a snap of it. I also included one of my better shots of the day C&C welcome.
