Shutter count has been mentioned here a few times and I can't find any signs of it in the menus on my D-800. Can someone help me find my count? I use consecutive numbering, so I know it is over 14,000, but does the camera keep this info where I can get to it?

shuttercount.com or nikon shutter count.com You will have to take a small jpeg and plug it in to one of these programs to get a shutter count reading.

If you are a Nikon user (maybe others) with a mac computer, here is a quick and simple way to view your shutter count.

1. Open the image using 'Preview'
2. Click 'Command' and 'I' keys together
3. In the window that opens up, click on the middle tab with the label 'i'
4. Click on the 'Nikon' tab
5. The camera shutter count is number five on the list of items.

Take a picture, use an online service like http://exifdata.com/

or an application like http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

The information will be in there.

You have lots of choices.

http://kentweakley.com/blog/photo-tip-photos-camera/
http://regex.info/exif.cgi
Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info.
Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

Right! Every camera should be able to show the shutter count, even the cheap P&S.

Sorry Sarg but I don't understand your comment. I have had the camera for two years and I have shot 18,000 photos. How does that relate to shooting video?

It was a flippant way of saying he thinks that you are not using your camera enough.
