Go to you tube and try the Anthony Morganti tutorials. They are free and he does a good job explaining the processes.

I agree with the above post. I found this site full of information and this is coming from a teacher who has 34 years teaching experience. He has 51 separate classes that cost you nothing but your time. I believe his site is anthonymorganti.com

No need to hold off: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to Windows 8, and I think 7 as well.

I thought window 8 would be free upgrade but didn't know about window 7. I've had more advice buying windows 7 from friends because of issues with window 8. I want to buy a computer soon but do not want to wait until some unknown time when window 8 is released.

My opinion:

BUT - both are comparable in performance... not much difference...

No real reason to have a 3TB hd internal to either... I would drop that down to 1 TB and invest in externals.

RAM - get the IMac with 8 GB and upgrade to 32 from OWC - about half the cost of Apple Ram.

I would much rather be running on a version of UNIX which is way more bulletproof than anything running on a PC these days, especially if it is from Microsoft.

When that PC is creaking and tired in a year, the IMac will be moving along the same as the day you brought it home. It will run for years with zero issues - very few Windows users can say that.

Thats a misnomer - you do not necessarily get more for the buck, but it is your choice ;)

I used to think the same way...

The computer that I'm comparing is a Dell verse Imac. Both have i7 processor, 32 gm, 3 TB hard drive with 27" monitor. Dell price is 2,279.99 and Mac price is 2,949.00 according to their web site and a Mac store I visited. They told me macs are about 20% higher than PC.

Get Windows 8.1 - it's not difficult to learn.

And the added advantage over Win 7 is that, when Microsoft launches Windows 10 later this year, all Win 8.1 users will be able to upgrade for free. This facility will available to Win 8.1 users for 12 months only from the date of launch.

Lots of good info about Win 10 here .....

Thanks for this information.

Thanks for the reply. Mac price is out of my price range. Already investigated price with mac verse PC. PC is roughly $400 more for exact same material that is in a PC that I'm looking at purchasing. Therefore, I'm going with a PC and getting more for the buck.

I'll be buying a new computer in the near future. Should I have windows 8 or 7 installed on the computer. I found out that some computer companies will only install window 8 because that is new technology. I've been informed that I can have no windows install and buy directly from adobe for window 7. What is your opening -lightroom users?

If you are getting a desktop (more bang for the buck), you will either save a lot of $$ or get a more powerful system if you consider a Windows system. For your budget of $2500 you can get fast i7 quad core cpu 32 gb ram, dual 30 bit 24" displays, workstation graphics card that will show 30 bit color when editing in Photoshop (if you go that route), and more internal storage than any Apple product can offer. With any motherboard that supports Intel Rapid Storage technology, you can use a small inexpensive SSD drive to cache a 1 TB system drive, (90% of the performance of an SSD only solution, but only 25% of the price), and 3TB storage drive (possibly larger in this budget), and you can use high quality high duty cycle enterprise drives as opposed to the junk you by from Best Buy. Something to consider. BTW, I have been specifying and building machines since 1983. I also have supported Apple products.

Where can I buy a system like the one you have described? iMac with 3.5GHZ Quad-core i7 with 16mg memory, 1tb serial ATA Drive @7200 with NVIDIA Geforce GTX 780m 4GH GDDR5 will cost me 2,513.00 with 27" monitor.
I've been looking at Dell and iMac. But Mac is expensive but is high quality from my research.

Phil Steele & Anthony Morganti both have excellent videos on You Tube for free, and paid through them as well. I just purchased my new Mac with several upgrades for $2400 and change. If you never used a Mac you will love it.
I'm learning a lot with Anthony Morganti. Thanks for those who suggested this person

I would like to thank everyone for their help. I've been looking at Dell and Mac. I live in the country and I'll be making a trip to the city to look at Macs and Dell computers. I appreciate everyone's suggestions. It appears that I can pay a lot more for the price with Dell over Mac. I'll find out tomorrow. Thank you for the info regarding-Lightroom 6 has been announced and I think the release date is mid March 2015. If I find a computer with Windows 7 would that be better to buy instead of Windows 8?

I plan on purchasing light room and a new computer. What are your recommendations regarding how to learn light room? What educational videos or down loads might you recommend? Any suggestions on computers under $2,500

Do you really need a tripod?

What type of pictures will you be taking that require a tripod?

Great question. I like hiking in the back country and have read several post about individuals needing tripods to get clear clean pictures. Having no experience with my new D7100 with the 18-300mm lens- I want high quality pictures. Therefore, I'm looking at the possibility of buying a pack packing tripod to use in the wilderness and when I travel.

Mike, I have used the CT3442 with their CB50D and found it more than adequate, plus it allows the legs to be folded 180 degrees so you don't have remove it and install it each time you use it.

I would have no hesitation to take it or the Sirui hiking or backpacking.

I have the big brother - the CT3472 which have used with a D300 (cropped sensor), a 600mm F4 and a 1.4X extender - total focal effective focal length of to 1260mm get this image at 1/10 sec - the only blur you see is the bird's leg moving.

Thank you for the above recommendations. For a while I was shocked at some of the prices for tripods for $800. I was thinking that a tripod was out of my pocket. However, your links and opinion's are very helpful and a great guide line
