Its always a good idea to turn off anything using battery power before removing it from that power source! Your camera should always be turned off when removing a lens, flash, grip or memory card also.

It is in me to always ask "why" rather than blindly follow rules. Not that I am questioning the rationalle but to know "why" really helps me to remember, also adding a bit more information of the how, that things work. Thanks

I just read an article about using flash when taking a photo into the sun to expose the forground. I like the golden effect the sun has during a sunset and wanted to take photos into the sun without sun flair. The article also suggest using an umbrella as shade. My questions is this, anyone have more ideas on how to do this type of photography. I have a canon 60d and I would be using a 10 20 lens. I also have polarizer filter and a ND filter along with a warming filter.

I try and hide the sun behind the person while retaining the golden artifacts of the late sun. Also On occasion the sun's flare can provide some interesting effects when just to the upper SouthWest side of the person's head.

Hello UHH members. I have been a silent member for a while and decided to become an active member. Will post photos in the future. We are planning a trip to San Fransisco and Monterey this June, (never been there before) and am looking for suggestions of best places for taking pictures. We will be staying by Fishermans Warf for 2 days and Monterey for 2 days. So much to do so little time.

Don't forget your camera...lol

I purposly bought the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 model WITHOUT OS on it as I have never needed image stabilization with lenses in that range. ( I used the Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 for almost 20 years before selling it in favor of the Sigma) Also you save a lot in weight and in purchase price. I use that fast lens primarily handheld for sports and IS/OS/VR, whatever seems to slow down the AF system and leaves you with a chance of missing shots, especially if shooting rapidly.
From 300mm up I find the image stabilization systems very valuable.

I have read that the extra glass required for IS, OS is actually a degrading factor in photo quality even when IS is off. Do you know if this is true? Thanks

Has anyone had any experiences with such a gadget? (Fotodiox Canon EOS Macro Extension Tube Set Kit for Extreme Close-up)

I got it for 11 bucks and this is what it does. These are not the best pictures but I am trying to see what this thing does. I do get quite close up but I am not sure I like the quality or lack there of. I would rather buy a nice macro lens but the budget won't have it right now. So this is it for now.

What aperture was used in last photo?

B&H, Adorama are at the top of the list, I have bought most of my gear there. I feel that my odds of a perfect transaction are butter online AND w/ out state and its 10% (once rounded) sales tax it does not make any sense to buy local.

The bulk of a city's revenue comes from sales taxes.

If the city is smart enough to have a sales tax. I live in Portland Oregon.

I guess NC is about avg in taxing....state, city, county taxes + 7.5% sales + gasoline tax of .51/gallon .....taxes, taxes & more taxes we probably do not realize! When in college in CH, NC we paid $.14/gallon total...never even thought about the tax....and here we are 50 years later paying $4.00/gallon and $17.00/lb for fillet mignon.

Over a half century ago, Nikon made their post-WW2 claim to fame by developing lenses able to accurately & evenly enlarge & project micro-fiche stored film images. They named their line of lenses "Micro", and have continued with that nomenclature long after micro-fiche storage was superseded by magnetic, and now digital record storage.

Thanks Nikonian......had to be history and not arbitrary....
actually I really never understood the origin of macro...my physics and optical education early on did not see the need for macro and or micro....why both?

Nikonian72 has a FAQ on this http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26505-1.html

Macro is 1:1 - 10:1 magnification.
Micro is greater than 10:1 magnification.

Does that mean Nikon's Micro is greater than 10:1?

Nope. It's just a name.

Thanks....

Isn't the focal length based on a "perfect" simple lens, the physical FL being some what shorter, at least on the (compound) telephotos?

Good point, snowbear. It brings up the difference between a long-focal-length lens and a telephoto lens. A 500mm LFL lens would be somewhere near 20" from the sensor plane to the optical axis of the lens. A telephoto lens (in extremely simplified terms) optically "folds" that length to create a shorter lens. Like "folding" a 20" piece of wire...we might wind up with a 5" package, but it's still a 20" piece of wire.
Maybe oversimplified, but still...
