Nikonian72 has a FAQ on this http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26505-1.html

Macro is 1:1 - 10:1 magnification.
Micro is greater than 10:1 magnification.

As previously noted, the "micro-Nikkor" designates a lens that focuses to 1:1.

Does that mean Nikon's Micro is greater than 10:1?

Micro used to mean making images things small, as in micro fiche. It may have been a language problem, for some reason Nikon called there close focusing lenses micro. These things seem to drive photo gramarians crazy. Macro is supposed to mean the lens will put a one to one image on the film or sensor and possible adjusted to optimize a flat field of view.

From a creative point of view none of this matters. A 60mm or 100 mm macro lenses is a great tool for flowers, bugs and portraits. If your friends are beyond thirty you can make them happy with a bit of Photoshop blur.

I have found crawling around with my close up lens a great pleasure. I would just recommend a gardens knee pad.

Over a half century ago, Nikon made their post-WW2 claim to fame by developing lenses able to accurately & evenly enlarge & project micro-fiche stored film images. They named their line of lenses "Micro", and have continued with that nomenclature long after micro-fiche storage was superseded by magnetic, and now digital record storage.

Thanks Nikonian......had to be history and not arbitrary....
actually I really never understood the origin of macro...my physics and optical education early on did not see the need for macro and or micro....why both?

I have 3 of Nikons Micros, a 60mm, 105mm and the hard to find 200mm, the 200mm is awesome in optics but is a pretty old design and could be upgraded, Nikon now offers a 40mm micro but it is geared toward DX sensor bodies.

All three that I use are awesome.
