Yep, that's me.

I wonder if I am the only one who makes camera and lens purchases based, at least partly, on impressing others.
I live in the woods, on a lake, and when no one can see what I am using, which is most of the time, I could very well get superb pictures with my old Minolta X570 with my 45mm f 2 lens. But, when I am in public, or with my photo friends I sort of want to impress them, and feed my ego, by carrying my high end digital Nikon with super lenses. Again, am I the only Hog with this kind of ego?

I haven't read through all the responses, so pardon me if I repeat anyone. This reminds me of the story where someone was admiring a photographer's photo and remarked that they must have a good camera. The photographer, who just finished dinner, replied that the food was really good, you must have a really good oven.

A good camera will give you more options to tweak, but in the end, it's all about the composition in my opinion.

you can experiment with "out of focus" shots just to see the results. Christmas time is really fun to do unfocused shots with the lights. I like to take close up pictures with a very large aperture with shrubs, grass or leaves behind for a nice background. Experimentation is a good teacher.

I think actions like this is irresponsible. Self preservation comes first.

I mostly shoot jpeg but last weekend I shot some eagles in raw. Opening them in Lightroom, as expected, there was some noise. When I shoot jpeg I am disappointed if I have to push the luminance slider much past 21. With a raw image I find myself pushing the luminance slider up to 40 or more to get rid of noise. Is that the experience of you raw shooters? I was using 7d mark 2 and Canon 100-400 version 2. I know jpeg is doing some sharpening and noise reduction. I'm just wondering how much should I expect to do in raw.

In jpeg, image pixels are thrown out to compress the image and save space. RAW contains 100% of the image. You will have more dynamic range and more to adjust with the sliders. Once you have the image looking the way you want, then create the jpeg as the final image.

I've read many times that if I use my Nikon D800 set to DX and use my FX lenses their focal length is multiplied by 1.5. So, my 70 - 200mm lens becomes a 105 - 300mm lens. That sounds a lot better to me than buying a 300mm lens.
What are some of the downsides? I'm mainly concerned about image quality and cropping.

Focal length doesn't change. You are losing part of the image. You can do the same thing by shooting in FX and crop it in post processing. It's up to you. I shoot the full FX format and then crop the image to get the subject I wanted.

How many of you use auto iso and what are some circumstances when you would want to? With speedlite? With manual? When wouldn't you want to?

I use Auto ISO when lighting changes frequently. I never use it with a speed light.

I shoot the full size of the camera's sensor. You can post process the image to a 16x9 and make some adjustments before creating the final image.

I use raw and then post process the image. There are many times I crop the image to get specific detail and composition. Shooting in raw gives me the detail and flexibility I need. Once I'm done with that process, then I create the jpeg for the final copy to print.

I think this question would be better posed on a government website or local authorities.

So much to learn, with so little time. I wish I'd chosen photography when I was a lot younger.
Currently capturing reasonable images with my Canon EOS 1100D, which I love with the 75-300mm lens, but I'm not entirely happy with the colour and resolution, therefore, looking to purchase a Nikon. Is there a big difference?

There is a lot that you can do in post processing to enhance the images. I shoot all my photos in raw format and use Lightroom to make adjustments. The camera can do this, but you only have one shot per photo to get it right. Post processing gives you more flexibility.

Good morning all, just wanted to get some opinions on the full frame vs crop sensor debate. Which do you use and why?

Depending on your budget and what you want to do, check out the medium format camera's. Larger sensor and much better image quality.

Love my D810, but if it had flicker detection (for fluorescent and other pulsing light) and a real lower resolution raw option, it would make me a happy camper.

D810 had flicker detection, selectable for Auto, 50hz or 60hz in the Setup Menu.
