Well, it isn't free, but it is a one time buy, I am now using Luminar 2018, and soon will reload Lightroom

Lightroom no longer offers a one time purchase, it is all monthly fee based now. They don't support LR 5 at all, and LR6 will also soon be abandoned.

Canon & Nikon both have refurbished gear on their site for a price somewhat reduced from new. they don't always have everything you might want. If he has not committed to photography, you should consider a mid-price camera. Canon T6i with a 50m prime and a mid-range zoom would help him decide, without spending a fortune that might end up in a box somewhere. You can get the lenses refurbished as well. With Canon, you get a full 1 year warranty. Get better quality lenses that can be used with an upgrade in body.

Thanks for all the comments. I will probably move to the subscription form at some point, but I am also coaching a number of neophytes who don't want to commit to the repeated cost. I also find it disappointing that Picasa is no longer an option. But I suppose that is what they call progress.

This week I got a survey from Adobe about their stand alone vs subscription programs. Up until Friday, you could buy a stand-alone V.6. As of today, you cannot, even though it says you can on their page. They have gone entirely to subscription based programing. For me, that means it is time to change programs. Any suggestions that will not require to much of a learning curve? Free is good. Under $100 is acceptable.

Canon all the way.

Try looking at refurbished lenses on the Canon site. (Google - Canon refurbished lenses) These are lenses that have been returned by reps or stores. They are fully inspected and any repairs made, and have a full warranty. New boxed lenses are spot checked, while these are are individually inspected. I have bought cameras and lenses this way, and never had a problem. You may not find what you want all the time but patience will payoff.

He might be on the job. Nice if you get to use someone else's money. I have to wonder if all the weight would make for instability?

So I see a greater fan base for the canon lenses, but I don't have the budget for a new one.
I appreciate the comments, but I'm not sure why I should go with a Canon (I'd have to purchase a used one on my budget.)
Could you please comment on the qualities of each lens for comparison's sake?

Look at Canon refurbished lenses. These are not used, but may have been in a store, and sold at a reduced price. they are rebuilt to repair cosmetic wear and fully guaranteed, You can also look at B&H photo or Adaorama. Both mail order out of NY with a good reputation. I have been buying refurbished from Canon with no complaints. While production line gear is spot checked, refurbished is 100% checked.

I found this lens on Amazon.com and was wondering if anybody has used this lens and whether you have any insight on whether it would be a good all round lens. I like the price on it but am concerned that it has been discontinued. I am considering purchasing a D3300 and am trying to decide the best combination of lens that will get me the best bang for my buck. I am thinking about a lens like this and a 35mm f/1.8. This will give me more range than the two kit lens that I can get with a bundle and would mean less lens changing. I am a beginner to DSLR. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
I found this lens on Amazon.com and was wondering ... (show quote)

I would suggest you go to a brick & mortar store, put various lenses on the camera (bring your own SD card) and take a few pictures with each. Do one inside, one outside. Older, used glass is good for a start, but if you are serious, there are (usually) significant improvements in each new generation of lenses. See if you like the results with the new 3rd party lenses as much as Nikon. You can buy excellent refurbished glass directly from Nikon at a discount, or look at B&HPhoto or Adaorama.com. Both have good reputations for quality, as well as a good used selection. Return policies are more reliable than Amazon. You might get a better deal on Amazon, but there are also risks. If you want the one on Amazon, see if you can return it if it is not what you expected.

Agree, but without some harassment clause in the contract, they can sue, claiming you defaulted. Read the article at the link.

The 100-400mm II is an excellent lens and would be great, so long as you are okay with the cost ($2000)

Canon sells refurbished lenses. The 100-400mm I f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is currently $1223.28. They come with a full 1 year US warranty. The model II is $1583.28. Both are currently out of stock, but they do show often. Canon refurbished are like new, used by sales reps or stores. They are overhauled to replace any wear and then 100% inspected, which is better than the NIB.

What does one politely say when someone notices you take lots of pictures of others and then offers to take your camera and take a picture of you, so you can finally be in one, but you are reluctant to relinquish your nice camera into someone else's hands?

If you are with a group, or someone you know, why not? Otherwise, I am working on a project, and the editor has a professional team to do my head shots. Otherwise, "No, but thanks for offering."

You might try a security officer uniform, but to impersonate a cop is illegal. I don't think I would admit that I do that in any form that could be presented in court as evidence.
