I will not get into the raw versus jpg argument but for your purposes, why even use raw? Your camera came with software which probably converts raw to jpg and that should do the job.
PS The effort and thinking to process jpg and raw are the same but the latter can give far superior results.

Well, it isn't free, but it is a one time buy, I am now using Luminar 2018, and soon will reload Lightroom
Canon Digital Photo Professional. Came on CD with your camera. You can download latest version from Canon support website.
Use Darktable as a free raw editor and GIMP as a free processor. Darktable is sort of like ACR to Adobe and GIMP is like Photoshop to Adobe and Darktable links into GIMP. Both programs are free open source and work well. You might want to sign up with Udemy for $20 they have a great online education on GIMP. GIMP also comes with a downloadable manual that is free. In my estimation if you do not want to pay for high caliber software these two programs are your best alternatives.
Punch your question into Google and then make up your mind.

Raw Therapee is an excellent processer.
Raw Therapee is one and it is about as versatile as can be imagined (meaning that it has so many options there is a significant learning curve). The same people have another product, Darktable, that I've not used, but it is newer and I believe has more similarities with Lightroom.

I agree, I have used it for the past several years for my Nikon and Olympus RAW files.

Agreed. There is nothing free that is better than
Canon Digital Photo Professional for Canon RAW files. Simply find the CDs that came with your camera or have your camera ready and visit the Canon website and download the latest v4 version of the software (look for "downloads" in the support section for your camera model). You need your camera because you're prompted for the serial number to unlock the download. Any valid EOS serial number will work.

Use the one that came with your camera. DPP is free and it works fine!
