I suspect the natural uppers decayed to the point that they had to be replaced for the "Father of our Country" to be able to chew. The awful-looking lowers appear to me to be natural teeth, badly decayed, but still usable. I wonder how he kept the artificial ones in---small wires?
Johann--- I'm not well-informed about spiders, but find them interesting. Possibly the "eyes" (ocelli) that do not form images, but are sensitive to changing light intensities would have selective value. Detection of a sudden shadow in one direction, for example, by these light receptors might indicate movement, and elicit an adaptive response on the part of their owner. 'Just an hypothesis. --- Ed
Note that this fine specimen has eight eyes, as other spiders do. (However, only two if the eyes actually form an image. The other six are sensitive to light, thus still of great value to their owner.) 'Just thought you might like to know, in case you did not.
The cranes seem to nearly jump off the page. As a novice I'm sort of wondering what's wrong with using a high ASA? The pictures do not seem grainy to me.
Stunning! I wish I could see those lanes through the eyepiece. --Ed
Good poems. They remind me of Wordsworth, also of the Prelude to "Death and Transfiguration" (Tod und Verklarung) by Richard Strauss.
The reflection in the second photo seems remarkable; of course the others are great also.
I attach a card reader to a port in my TV, and get a really large image. Also,it works as a slideshow.
Jeep daddy: I also think that the nickname Ed comes from Edward.

I did not know that flowers could bloom so early in Arizona. Do you think they would bloom yet in places like Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument? By the way, your photos are lovely.
This a very nice photo, but I have a question: In what phase was the moon? --Ed
My camera is a Nikon DSLR-510O; it uses a button battery, which I have not changed in six years. However, I check about once a month for any sign of deterioration. So far I have had no difficulty with it, but this discussion makes me think I should get a new battery, just to be safe.
Brian, thank you for all that info. You are certainly dedicated! I have a C-14 in a dome that won't rotate without a struggle, and an Obsession-25 that I'm getting too old and weak to handle. When I can, and the weather and Moon are favorable I like to look, but do little photography (Moon, brighter planets). After many years of severe light pollution, I live in a very rural area---not much light, and at times really beautiful. Thanks again. Ed
Fantastic. #2 must have been a longer exposure (?). Did you use any kind of filter? CD camera or DSLR ?
