Yes, I know the obvious choice is likely the Nikon. But the lowest I’ve seen, on Amazon, for the Nikon is between $550-600, while a NEW Tamron is $499. I’ve seen the Tamron, used/“like new”, from $250 to $399.

For $250, I can’t see the problem with the Tamron, but would be Nikon be almost three times the lens in terms of build and image quality? Supposedly, it’s the best DX (midrange) zoom available.

I am looking for suggestions on the best place (and cheapest) to post photos for family and friends with some level of privacy. Email is pretty clunky for sharing. I am strictly an amateur but on occasion shoot school pictures for grand kids and family portraits. I'd like to be able to post all of the "proofs" somewhere so they could choose the prints they want.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Heading to Eastern Sierras April 27-May 10. Flying to SF, driving to Tahoe then down to Bishop for 3 days and Lone Pine for 4 days. Anyone have any suggestions for any "out of the way special places" for landscape photography?
Any help at all on this itinerary would be appreciated.

You mean you are gonna be this close to Yosimite and don't go. If you never been there and don't go you will hate yourself.
Then again it may be closed. But you might wanna check it out.

You may want to stop at Convict Lake, its only a few miles (2) off Hwy 395, its worth seeing. Trout Season opens up at the end of April, so the whole area along 395 gonna be swarming with trout fisherman. Maybe a little crowded? and a lot of traffic? Good Luck...

For the Marines, the M50 Antos was a light-armored, tracked, infantry-support vehicle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M50_Ontos

Yeppers, I remember it well. In early 1965 Chu Lia Viet-nam, we used to escort the tanks on patrol and they had a few Ontos that would be there. Some of the roads and bridges would be to small for the tanks to cross but the Ontos was small enough to cross, so we would escort them into some of the villages.
Sometimes in combat they would be perched atop a hill and would fire tracer 50mm at their targets and once they spotted their target then they would cut loose with all six 105mm barrels at the same time. Truly awesome sight. I stopped seeing them after about 3 or 4 months.

Years ago I was booking it down the Great Divide Road in northwest Colorado to read meters for the electric utility company when a pronghorn jumped out in front of me and ran and ran and ran. Of course, being a meter reader, I was not dawdling. Then, for no apparent reason, he veered off to the left running head first into a fence. He fell to the ground stunned. I stopped. He stood. Shaking off his stupor he slipped under the fence, and bolted towards the horizon. I was bewildered.

There is a dichotomy when it comes to pronghorn. First, they are loved and admired for their beauty and gracefulness; yet at the same time they are hated, especially by ranchers, for being a nuisance and destroying crops.

They can sprint 60 mph and sustain a speed of 30 mph for miles. They have large eyes and fantastic vision; and can see movement as far as three miles away. They are amazing animals.

I found this one in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
