This Merganser caught and ate 4 or 5 of these fish. After he catches them, he shakes them violently by the leg with the claw until the leg breaks off. As you can see in this image, the leg has just broken off. Then the fish lands back into the water and the Merganser retrieves it by the other leg and shakes it again until that one breaks off too. Then he promptly devours the fish tail first. It's funny because his mate is always next to him and he never shares his catch with her. I wonder what's up with that?

The claws have a very thick exoskeleton. He probably cannot break through them to get the meat inside.

True. In fact, they can't digest any of the exoskeleton and I saw him cough up a big wad of red stuff that I'm sure was the undigested exoskeleton.
