You did a nice job, if I didn't see the first one, I wouldn't know what you had done.

Great job on the first one, I couldn't see where the changes were made on the first one, and as long as we don't start duplicating children we're okay, you know it's illegal to clone people, right?

GG..your ability to use the tools is just amazing...the clone tool is a tough one to get down....It took me several hours & tries to do this...but after all the practice I think i got it.

The second in is Goldfield, Nev. - made lots of changes. in both left hand corners and the poles on the right...

Nice ending image. Clone can really help once you get the hang of it.

Hi everyone, need a little help on this one I want to have this made into a canvas, it will be a gallery wrap so some will go around the edges, in the original her Mum cut off her foot behind the wall, I cropped it in a bit and added a bit to her foot and the paving???? then I tried to clone in some of the bushes and gravel into the 3rd one. Does the 3rd one look too terrible or do you think I could get away with what I did??????? should I crop it someplace else couldn't get rid of the IPad she is holding, I really wanted the whole length because I like the colour of their Easter dresses, but if it dosent look right then I need to scrap my idea of the canvas, please tell me what you think

Nice work on the water hose, and thanks for getting starting an interesting day.

This is a short video, if you have no clue what a clone tool does this will totally help you to understand. It's a great tool to get rid of those telephone wires in a picture.

Just happens that I am working on an image that needed a little CLONE work done. The first two are done in a Panorama, then I used CLONE and DODGE to get rid of the reflection of lights on the floor. I think Clone is on of my favorite tools, sometimes it works well, other times it makes a mess. This time I like what I was able to do.

I don't comment much on images or comments made, but I want you to know that I apreciate your input here. I started this forum because I also am learning, and in the other forums there was no specific help. You do a great job of teaching and advising others here. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your contiued support.

Conkerwood -- what specifically causes those halos? too much contrast?

We all know when halos are likely to arise ie when there is a strong dark area with a strong light area behind it. But as for pinning down the exact reason its a bit difficult because its not as the result of one control but the interaction of several. But whatever explanation you come up with careful adjustment of sliders will largely solve the problem. Certainly when you start using the surreal and surreal plus settings in Photomatix combined with high strength you are going to generate halos but highlight smoothing (one of the most useful of the photomatix sliders) gives you a smooth gradation between tones instead of an abrupt one so that moving the smooth highlights slider to the right tends to largely eliminate them. But the problem is that this can also dampen down the effect we are trying to achieve so its a balancing act. The trap is to assume that you are going to always eliminate halos in the HDR processing stage which is not the case. It is often good to retain a small residual halo so that you can retain the effect that you want for the rest of the pic. But you must then remove the residual halo in PP using photoshop or lightroom or whatever. There are a number of ways to remove residual halos in PP some use dodging and burning, personally I prefer to duplicate the layer, darken it, create a layer mask set at 'hide all' and then reveal it with a soft brush set to a low flow.

So back to your original question what causes halos. Yes its a contrast issue, but it is not a necessary consequence of HDR. You need to take your time, be patient, and learn how the sliders work together. If you end up producing a pic with a strong halo you haven't got the settings right..... yet! (And it takes a little while when you are first coming to grips with the software.) So when you end up with huge halos there's nothing for it but to go back and try again, as I said, its all a balancing act and it takes practice.
Hope this helps

Right now what makes me go Ooooo are the talents of others. This Vase was made by a lady in my pottery class. I think I could make the pot, but not the beautiful art on it. Second is a plastic pumpkin, but was decorated by a lady in one of the Art Classes at the same place.

The fountain and flowers were there, but they want to advertise their buisiness. I shot this a few different ways, but they loved this image when they saw it. I usually do it their way, then give them other options.

Nan - I think the first shot shows best what you are looking for in todays challenge, just my opinion. The second one does work very well with the fence and bike enhancing the covered bridge shot also.

Annette - the fourth one of the cabin is a wonderful shot, crisp and colorful, well focused. If I may offer a thought or idea, a little cropped from the bottom would make the fence enhance the cabin more. I could be wrong though. The last one is very good, my eye starts at the trees in the foreground and follows all the way through to horizon.

GG - your last shot seems to work best for the challenge but I have to say I like the other shots as well. Boo is adorable and is that mom and daughter? That is a treasure!

MM - love the shots. I am confused, are you saying the fountain and flowers were there and you just took the shot from there to beautify or did you add the fountain and flowers in PP? It is a great shot either way.

Marilyn - I aint Nan - but if you don't mind, I would like to say that I think this is a wonderful shot, well done!

Lass - we have a place like this near my mom's house. I can't figure out how one would move some of those really heavy concrete items from there to the yard but I love them! I like the soldiers, anchorage skyline and reflections but I think the one that best fits the challenge is son Gabriel.

Ann - Your shots just seem to be getting better to me.

Pg 2

Lonnie - I love the peak at the ocean between the beach grass

Subroto - Did you see that basketball back in that corner before you took the shot? Love the shapes and designs of your buildings.

Nan - the one where you said it works much better like this - i love that shot - nice place. Look at your beautiful blue sky too!! In the second set on this page, the last shot is awesome.

RR - wow - I think the water led my eye right to the trees, wow, look at those trees!

Pat - I think driftwood works best. It is there but almost overlooked as it leads your eye out to the water. well done. I love the last shot of all the pumpkins, very nice. (My white pumpkins did ok this year but my orange ones rotted on vine)

Cherihorn - the flowers work well - your shots are very good. I like the last one with all the tree roots sticking up out of the water the best.

Rich - lovely shots all, I think the last Big Sur works best for the subject of this challenge

Fred Ann - that is a lot of geese! The bittern shot is great. You did well to get that shot as they tend to blend i so well that often, even when I watch them land I can't find them with the camera.

hamtrack - Rockland Maine Harbor and Jonathon are perfect for this challenge

Hi Mike
I feel the cloning out of the van is far too much trouble especially if you can't replace what is behind it accurately. The lighting is far too flat too. I would try again another day with the light behind you. Like the colourful flowers and fountain.
The pool image is blue and again too flat. Maybe not chop off the tips of the 2 trees.
Don't mind the lamp post in the 3rd picture and you shouldn't remove it anyway as it is part of the scene which you want to represent relatively accurately in your promotion.
The last image is great, maybe a wee bit blue.
I understand your desire to not overcook the effects but a little bit more contrast, colour and shadows will make them look more appealing, as in image 3.

Agree comments re need to remove pole and crop out foreground considerably. But would suggest you consider cloning out the pole instead to retain the balance across the pic. The pole in that position should be relatively easy to clone out.

Thanks for the comments, I think you're right about the pole. I will probably be reshooting a couple of these, but it's a good place to start.
