By "less light", do you mean cutting back on speedlight (flash) output?
The Lorquin Entomology Society (of Los Angeles) hosted a late morning outing to Madrona Marsh Preserve:
https://www.torranceca.gov/services/madrona-marsh-preserve-and-nature-centerModrona Marsh is best in Spring, when the rains swell the vernal pools, and spawn frogs, dragonflies, lots of native & migratory birds. Late Summer has far fewer insects, and SoCal heat makes them skittish.

I like your written description of your set-up. Would you be so kind as to post a top-view of your table-top set-up?
I see the possibility of a separate post on using Burst Mode with Helicon FB Tube and fixed light source.
I suggest that you re-post in the section Birds In Flight / Birds On Water, and post camera settings for each image: ISO, shutter duration, & aperture, as well as lens used.
For we non-focus-stackers, please define 'step value for this stack was "20" '. Thank you.
When this group cooperatively authors the Helicon HB Tube article, I want to use BOTH of this images to illustrate basic hardware set-up.
Mike, Mark, Tom, et al Helicon HB Tube owners/field users -
1.) Please consider cooperatively authoring a post for Frequently Asked Questions and Answers concerning use and settings for Helicon HB Tube for macro.
2.) Submit example photos (both good & bad), to illustrate points within the article.
3.) Submit article to me, and I will do a bit of compiling & editing, then post to FAQ&A thread.
