I am starting to get a bit more into this stacking technology. One subject for this method that I had considered from the very beginning are the strange 'Derbid' plant hoppers. My favorite species of these is this one, called Apache degeeri. This is a live female. Males are darker and I don't know what else since they seem much more flighty so I can't get a good look at them. She was stacked with the Helicon Fb tube in a staged session where the camera was propped on the backyard patio table with a plasticine clay rig sitting on a paper plate. So alignment and 'focusing was done by moving the plate around. Pictures were taken in 'burst' mode with a cable remote. If she moved, I started over. In this successful set I got 80 images at f/6.3. A Raynox 150 lens was attached to the macro lens, and illumination was from a pair of led bicycle lights that were affixed to the front of the lens. That lighting arrangement is the way I will want to go when I need supplemental lighting for stacking in the field. But it needs work. The set of pictures were assembled in Zerene. It hardly needed any touching up.
I recommend you enlarge the picture. Derbids are even weirder up close.
Yes, they are weird. Good work there!
You did well to get a nice flat plane and I think you got a good result. It seems that for live insects Lady Luck needs to play her part in bringing an insect to the right spot and that patience needs to be in good supply. Food may be a something to consider as an incentive. I haven't even tried to do this but I so admire you leaders in the field who work hard at it.
Mark,i bought the Godox lithium flash that Mike uses,i did a test shot it last night and got good results.i will post something today.i'm very hopeful it will be all i need for light

A very odd bug. Well done!
Great on the shot yes on the weird
Looking forward to more shots like this!
I like your written description of your set-up. Would you be so kind as to post a top-view of your table-top set-up?
I see the possibility of a separate post on using Burst Mode with Helicon FB Tube and fixed light source.

Next time I use it I can take pictures of the set up. My method of affixing the lights is very humble at this time, although it does work. Table-top ready but not field ready since it does not take to jostling.
A true challenge, stacking live subjects. Very Nice.
Excellent! Nice improvisation!
