Hey Paul,
The falls at Watlins State Park a very very nice. One of my favorites in the state are just down the road in the village of Montour Falls. Have you checked them out?

Blake

No I haven't, but thanks for the tip, I'll have to check them out!

Im sure this will annoy some because of the cost of the tripods but I would suggest one of the following or something similar:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/814492-REG/Oben_AC_2320L_3_Section_Aluminum_Lateral.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745960-REG/Vanguard_ALTA_PRO_263AB_100_Alta_Pro_263AB_100.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/718590-REG/Manfrotto_055XPROB_Tripod_Legs_Kit.html

Benro & Giottos make similar models too.

Take it from someone who has spent enough money on crappy tripods over the years, I wish I had done the homework and bought a decent one the first time, would have saved money in the long run. all 3 of these have center columns that can tilt/rotate, multiple angle legs and will do a great job on everything from Macro to Panoramic w/stitching. If you are looking to go lite they can be found in carbon fiber models too. No I'm not trying to plug B&H, they just tend to have pretty good info on products.

I'm meeting a meet and great club from Bath, NY. We're going on a shooting spree. Going to Ithaca, NY; and then on to Trumansburg, NY. Mostly waterfalls and creeks. Hope weather permits.

Weather not so good Sat, should be better Sun. If you go up to Taughannock Falls, bring a wipe for your lens or the mist will drive you crazy! Also hit it earlier in the day so sun will be at your back or over head, if you hit late in day mist spots on your lens will flare when sunlight hit them, will look like a bokeh nightmare!

Going up to Easman House.

I complain about the cold, but the trade off is summer in the Fingerlakes. Stunning waterfalls, great wineries, and unlike most of New York the economy is thriving. When vacation comes, all the friends & relatives want to come here, saves me a ton on plane tickets, but I usually spend it on wine & food to feed the guests!

I heard noise from camera and it was in manual focus, I'm guessing that is actually what I was hearing.

Hi Paul...
You didn't say what your shutter speed were, just that they were long. Now, normally if shooting the moon at ISO400, at f-5.6, your shutter speed should work out to about 1/3200 of a second. Very very...very fast. Remember, although the moon is in the middle of a dark sky, it is normally lit by direct sunlight.
I suspect your blurry results were brought about by extreme overexposure and probably (I say "probably" ) not from camera movement.
Viewing your results should show totally white circle with no detail, in the middle of a black background.
Let me know if this makes any sense to you!
Hi Paul... br You didn't say what your shutter spe... (show quote)

That does make sense, Haven't done much stuff at night, so it's kind of hit and miss. It was partially cloudy and was trying to pick up moonlight off clouds without getting blur from their movement. Will try a new approach next weekend with shorter exposure & IS/VC off. (if weather permits!) Thanks for the input.
