Why do you consider the photo 'sophomoric?'

The main light is too low and is casting broad light in an upward slant. Natural light comes from above. Short lighting falling down on the face slightly would be much better in my opinion. Short light would place the main light on camera right. This would help to slim the face and make for a more flattering portrait. I say sophomoric because it's a very basic, entry level portrait that could be much better with the aforementioned changes. See attached for an example of a basic one light (window) portrait in short lighting.

I’d take the lens with the widest maximum aperture. I doubt you’ll need the 300 very often.

At 16 megapixels and DX format on your D7000 you could do better with a full frame camera and 20+ megapixels. But resolution is only relevant and important if you enlarge beyond 20 inches and view closer than 2 feet or so. Higher resolution would allow you to crop in more and force more attention on the eagle. Whenever possible moving closer and or using a longer lens would be the best alternative to higher resolution. Z series mirrorless cameras however offer higher res and allot more. The focus on mirrorless is much more accurate for one. If I were you I’d go for the most camera you can afford.

Noise reduction will only dampen sharpness. It's a great image as is.

Cell phone manufactures have come from behind and really slaughtered camera companies with auto everything capabilities. For the vast majority of consumers there is really no need for a modern DSLR. Most people just post photos to social media and rarely print large but “real” photographers make photographs not photos. If your aim is superior imagery a cell phone won’t make it. But why lug around a heavy-ass camera for everyday imagery? Our cell phones are awesome. Embrace them.

Use Lightroom to edit first. Cull down the great from the good. Then go to develop mode and make adjustments. I would only use PS for layering when needed.

Great image. My rule is: sharpness always trumps noise. In other words a little noise is always better than a little softness because of a slow shutter. Having said that, I think you could have gotten the same level of sharpness from this photo with a 1000-2000 speed and reduced noise by a stop. Although the ball may have shown a little movement at 1/1000, that could arguably add to the excitement of the shot. But who can argue- Great photo!

Sophomoric to say the least.

Reminds me of the days before cell phones. There usefulness never ceases to amaze me. And the 10 cent kite, that really brings me back! Thanks for sharing.

I’m extremely happy with all my EF lenses on the R5. Right now I don’t see any need to purchase an R lens. As soon as I do I’ll have a mis-match with the adapter being stuck on the last lens I used. Now I simply leave the adapter on the camera and change lenses as needed. The EF’s I own perform better than they ever did on all the 5D cameras I own, so I plan to check the used market for mint condition EF’s as long as they’re available, and save lots of money at the same time.
