I think when he saw who was posting he had prejudged before he saw it, as I did. It's actually a pretty nice photo, surprise, surprise!

The main light is too low and is casting broad light in an upward slant. Natural light comes from above. Short lighting falling down on the face slightly would be much better in my opinion. Short light would place the main light on camera right. This would help to slim the face and make for a more flattering portrait. I say sophomoric because it's a very basic, entry level portrait that could be much better with the aforementioned changes. See attached for an example of a basic one light (window) portrait in short lighting.
