Thanks for these links. I'm just getting into BIF (and other wildlife) and I'll be haunting those topics in the coming days.
For that critter, I'd need an 18,000 mm lens and someone else to hold the camera!
Thanks for the post. I last dealt with Abe's of Maine about 10 years ago and everything was fine then. Looking at them now for a lens but I'm taking them off my list based on your experience. I was suspicious since everyone else's price was about the same and their ws significantly lower. Usually, there's a reason - TANSTAFL!
Not sure I have a "favorite". The Nikon 15-55 kit lens is on my D7100 most often, but I also carry a Promaster 28-200 with me and a Tamron 90 mm macro. I've also been playing with a reversed 50 mm Nikon enlarging lens (6 element) for some macro shots. Depends on what I'm shooting.
ever use a pinhole camera? It will give you a round image.....
This discussion reminds me of a conversation I had with an old photographer about 1959 or so. He said that only 8X10 cameras and larger were "serious" cameras. 4X5 was a portable camera that, in the hands of a skilled photographer, could take acceptable images and 35 mm was just a joke! How times change.....

Since you’re a D850 man I have a related question.
I used a D200 for years but finally caved and bought a D810 with which I’ m very pleased. Just getting used to the D810 when I read over the top comments on the D850. i’d appreciate any comments as to the advantages of the D850 over the D810. Portraiture, low light and cars.
Try this site: www.cameradecision.com; you can compare any two cameras to each other. Pretty complete.
Thanks - looking forward to learning a lot!
I have one and love it! Congrats to whoever got - I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I've been lurking on here for a while - the topics are interesting it looks like there are a number on interesting folks!
I'm a retired research chemist (specialized in spectroscopy) and have been interested in photography since my parents gave me a Kodak camera in 1957. Over the years, I've learned how to process B&W and E-6 film - and even managed to make some decent prints!
Currently, I shoot a Nikon D7100, having just sold off all my 35 mm film cameras. However, I'm not totally corrupted, I still shoot a Mamiya 645 pro tl - mostly with Velvia - and occasionally, an RB67.
My current interests are railroads and birds, I'm looking to add to the lens stable with a 300 of 400 mm lens.
I'm located in the USA - Delaware - and look forward to some trips to the beach later this year.
