No, the filter screws into the adapter which screws onto the camera lens. The adapter rings fit the camera lens fine. It's the filters that won't go into the adapter. I've reached a point where I don't know whether I'm coming or going. I'll see if I can get a photo of the rings.

So that seems to indicate that the pitches of filters and rings are different.

I posted this issue a couple of days ago and thought I had the problem solved but, I don't. I have a variable neutral density filter and a polarizing filter both of which are 77 mm. They are both high-quality, expensive filters. I'm trying to get step-up adapter rights so that I can use these filters on my 52, 58 and 67 mm lenses. I've bought two sets of adapter rings and still can't get either of my filters to screw into them. The adapter rings screw into the camera lens just fine but, the filters won't screw into the adapters for anything. Have any of you ever run into this problem? The adapters are marked just fine i.e.. 52 - 77 mm. The camera is a Nikon D -7100. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciiated.

Yes, I remember your earlier message. Since then, I've had a Hoya filter box in my hands, and noticed that beside the diameter of the lens front, there is also noted a "pitch" - I believe this is a number that tells you how close the threads of the "screw" part are together. A step-up ring of one pitch will not fit the front of a lens with a different pitch, even if the diameter is the same.
Have you taken your lens and the filter you want to fit on it to a camera shop and try it there before you even buy it?

PS - The filter I referred to is a Hoya Cir-Polarizing, 58mm, pitch 0.75

I have a question about increasing telephoto capability. I’m to understand the highest increase for distance shots (wildlife, birds) without tripod is 400mm. This can be done handheld with image stabilization, monopod, or assistance from a tree, rock, or other fixed object. One professional photographer even does outstanding shots from a kayak.
The question is how to get to 400mm.

What I have is a Canon 60D with a Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 lens.

Thistlecap, I just looked this up, your camera has a 1.6 crop factor, which means that the image you shoot with this lens extended to 250mm will give you the same image as a 400mm lens on a full-frame (35mm equivalent) camera.

A local fashion shop having a runway type fashion show and they have invited photographers to cover the event. I am a hobby photographer and would like to take some photos in this event and would like to get some advice others who have done this. One of my main concerns, what is the best mode, aperture priority, shutter or manual?. I have a D5100 with kit lenses 35MM and Sb700.

I can't advise you to lens or settings, as I have never taken photos at an event like that.

But a few things to consider:
If possible, visit the venue, and ask if the event will be held with the same lighting you see. If not, they might be willing to turn on the lighting as it will be for the event, so you can take some test shots.

You will be standing on the floor, the runway will be higher so you will be shooting "up". Unless you can find something to stand on. It might be an idea to take some test-photos beforehand: Ask a daughter, neighbour, wife, to stand on a chair or table and take some photos from different angles.
Or, there could be bleachers around the runway - in that case YOU stand on the chair or table to take the test shots.

Some fashion shows "run" at amazing speeds (is that why they call it the "runway"?). Setting your camera for sports photography might be helpful.
More than likely, the models will pose for a second or two at the end of the runway before turning around to go back. Be ready for that. The spots that give a clear view of the end of the runway will probably be quickly taken, so you need to be there early if a lot of photographers are expected.

Like I said, I've never taken photos at an event like this, but have been involved in a number of fashion shows, as dress-maker, "traffic controller" and organizer.

Dumb question for all you experts out there.

Were you reluctant to post your first photo for fear that it might be so bad that people would actually make fun of it? Or, worse yet, tell you it's nice because they didn't want to hurt your feelings?

OK, first things first: Welcome from another newby!
Then: There are NO dumb questions, only dumb people that don't ask the questions they want answers to.

Now that that's out of the way:
At the top of the page, where it says:
Photography Forum -> Main Photography Discussion
Click on "Photography Forum", then at the bottom of that list on All Sections.

In the next list you'll find a couple of sections that might interest you:

Photo Gallery - if you just want to show off your picture and get a pat on the back.

Photo Analysis - If you have a specific question about a picture you took.

Photo Critique and Analysis Forum - If you want a general critique of your image, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Frequently Asked Questions - self-explanatory

There are other forums as well that may be of interest to you: post-processing, close up, video, people.

When you go to each of the sections, you'll find that at least the first message, and for some sections, several messages, deal with the purpose and rules of that section. Just give them a quick read so you understand what that forum is all about.

Most of all: Find new things to learn, old things to improve on, and have fun while you're doing that!

Well, now you have me scratching my head as well. I was approaching the problem from how Windows treats pictures within folders, and as I can (or cannot) recall, there has never been a windows version where you could drag a file to another location WITHIN the folder and not have it snap back to the "proper sort" location. Therefore it's never occurred to me to look for a way to "turn off" auto arrange. The only place I know of an auto arrange is for desktop Icons.

We still have one computer running Windows Vista, and I tried it on there. Yes, in Windows Explorer you can indeed drag and drop files to a different sort order, although the default sort order is numeric/alphabetical.

Kuzano wrote:
I certainly don't want to speak to how this may have worked in Photoshop Elements because I have purposely disabled the Organizer in every version of Photoshop Elements since version 6, because of personal objections to it's weaknesses.
Great photo editor.... terrible Organizer. Even now.

I have never used the organizer of PSE, I'm now on version 12 but have also used 7, 9 and 11. My "organizer" is Windows Explorer.

Kuzano wrote:
Sorry if I misunderstood this, but I don't think it's due to any change in Windows Operating system. I've been working with people on Windows since the first working GUI... Windows 3.1. The file ordering structure has not changes substantially since then,

You must be as old as me ;) Our first computer ran DOS, but within a month my son had it running Windows 3.1 - with its 8-letter file names. Really the file system is very similar, it just looks more elegant now.

I hope Phyllis can find a solution to deal with her out-of-order photos. One solution might be to put the out-of-order ones in a separate folder, even if only temporarily.

Morning star gave a good explanation of how Windows wants to arrange files within folders. Windows uses ascending/descending sorts in all the header titles, signified by a small up pointing or down pointing arrow.

As long as I have worked on computer consulting, this has been a sort function within folders for file names.

Kuzano, reading over the messages again, what Phyllis wants to do is to sort the images herself, in Windows Explorer, by grabbing each one with the mouse cursor and dragging it to the location where she wants it - and this before she renames/renumbers them.
And unfortunately for her, that feature, while it existed in XP and Vista, and maybe in Win95 or Win98 as well, has now been scrapped.
I didn't even know this feature existed in those earlier versions, but even if I had known, would not have used it.

I think I have figured out to, what Phyllis meant by "opening the Browser in the Photo Editor Program."
It's not the "Browser" - it is Windows Explorer.
Open your editor, (mine is Photoshop Elements), then in the menu line, select File -> Open and the Explorer opens at that point so you can select the photo you want to open. At this point you can still grab and drag your photos to a different spot. The next time you go that route the photos are still where you put them, but open Windows Explorer independently from PSE and the images are back where they belong.

I have to upgrade my PC and have no choice but Win 8 on a new PC. I don't want to pay the high price of having to purchase CS6 (nearly $1K), as Adobe no longer offers upgrades.

Has anyone been able to get CS5 working on Win 8 64 bit?

Looks like I may have to go to GIMP and loose some of my plug-ins, if I can't find a solution.

Many of the plug-ins and pre-sets that work on Photoshop, will also work on Photoshop Elements. Sure, there are drawbacks, for example, you cannot record your own actions.
But Photoshop Elements combined with Elements+ (A $12.00 add-on program for PSE) makes for a very powerful combination.

Believe me, I did a lot of experimenting! Perhaps I am just not as photographically experienced as you. I am truly sorry you were bothered. Remember you were inexperienced at one time.

Phyllis, that begs the question: What Browser and what Photo Editing Program? And how do you open the Browser in you Photo Editing Program?

And "a group of students" was the extent of that experiment? Good chance that if the experiment is repeated next week, the results will be the exact opposite.
To quote a phrase from the article: "The researcher says this dependence on digital devices to remember events for us is keeping us from fully remembering the things we experience."
Let the researcher name me one, just one person, who fully remembers the things he/she experiences. It just doesn't happen.

In the prior versions, you could manually arrange files to, say create a certain order for viewing photographs. In Windows 7, you are stuck with the various auto-arrange options that the program gives you.

Well, I'll be... Been using Windows since version 3.1 and never knew that. I just tried it out on WinVista, and see what you mean.
I don't know what version of windows the headers choices started with, but that is what I have been using the last couple of years.

Apparently it is not possible to disable auto arrange when working with pictures in Windows 7 (except on the desktop). After downloading from my camera into a folder on my C Drive, I would like to rearrange these images prior to numbering (ex; 1, 2, 3, 4). Sometimes I need to move or rearrange groups within the folder. Had no trouble in XP, but Windows 7 does not give the option in View.

I see on the Internet that there is a download that will turn off the auto arrange, but it looks as though this would affect all files on the drive and then another download would have to be installed to return to the original. This doesn't seem like a good idea if used frequently. How have others gotten around this problem?

I am not sure that I understand what you mean, but I'll give this a try anyway.
In Windows explorer, both in WinXP and in Win7, the default for arranging the files is in numerical/alphabetical order.
If you want any other order, for example, if you want them in the order they were modified, or if you have photos from more than one camera in the same folder and want to put the images from the same camera together, you'll will have to select different headings in Windows Explorer.
Right-click on any one of the headers that are already there, and select the header you want to add. (Note the More-button on the bottom). Bit of a nuisance, but you've got to right click for each additional header.
When done, just click on a header and all the files will be listed in numerical/alphabetical order for that column.

If that is not what you mean, could you please clarify? Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

I have a Canon 7d and the battery meter reading is not working, whenever I put fully charge or usable charge battery on my DSLR there's always an error message saying “Cannot Communicate to Battery”. I did try to remove the door compartment of the battery, I even remove the LP-E6 battery (I got it from Mr. Google) wait for more than 20 mins and still not working. One other thing I notice it drains my battery if i leave it onto my DSLR for overnight. I called Cannon regarding this, but you know what next.

FYI, my camera still working if I use it, the only thing worries me is that I don't know when my battery needs to be charge.

Anyway, Help! need to fix this its annoying issue.

Thank you for your time and Have a wonderful Season!

I've never heard of Mr. Google, and when I Googled it, nothing that looked like Photography or Canon, came up.
But it makes me think that you don't have an original Canon battery but rather a knock-off.
After you click OK on the screen you showed in your image, can you access the serial number of the battery? See page 232 of your camera's manual. If there is no serial number, it makes me think even more that it may be a knock-off battery.

Peter, this was the first line in the forum digest I received this morning. Allow me as a "newbie" to put in my 2 cents worth.
First: My congratulations on the sharpness of the bird in this image. I wish.... (thinking of some of my own photos).

I don't mind the crop of his tail and backside, but when I look at the overall picture, I expect him to suddenly put his head forward to pick a hole on the side of the picture.
In other words, I feel there is not enough space on the right hand side of the photo. I believe if you at least tripled the space between beak and edge, and reduced the space between top of his head and top edge, you would have a more pleasing composition.
But even at the current composition, I am still jealous at the sharpness!!

Turning the VR off when camera is on a tripod, has been adequately dealt with here.

One other, related caution:
Do not turn the camera off or remove the lens while vibration reduction is in effect.
See page 238 of the Reference Manual for this camera.
